Using Combinations...

Postby Kombaiyashii » Sep 28 2010

Hi

Please can you critique this little piece of math...

Let's say I've got a pocket pair and I want to work out how many combinations on the flop for any card that will not make another pair or set.

For instance if I'm holding AA then I'm trying to work out the combinations for three different ranks, 2,3,4 for example.

So my working is...

48*44*40/3! = 14080

I've 48 cards remaining that won't make a set, so I would take that number. Then I'll multiply it by 44 cards which won't make a set or a pair and finally I shall multiply it by 40 which is the final amount of cards that won't make a pair/set.

This equals 84480

I then take this number and divide it by 3! to get the right number of combinations...

So the final answer will be 14080.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I'm really trying to learn this but am finding it quite difficult,

Thanks

That looks right although usually I'd just go 48/50 * 44/49 * 40/48 = 0.71836735 or 72% chance

It depends on exactly what you're trying to calculate. As far as it goes I see nothing wrong with what you posted.

Note that the calculation I posted above is equivalent to:
(48 ⋅ 44 ⋅ 40 / 3!)/(50 ⋅ 49 ⋅ 48 / 3!)

Thanks very much for your post...

I really just wanted confirmation to give me confidence with working out more combinations.
