"Double up" SNG math

Postby Bullajami » Jan 17 2010

Would someone be so kind as to check my numbers, please. I see that the Carbon Poker network (and maybe others, too?) are offering "double up" SNGs. There are a variety of buy-ins, and the fee structure for all is 8%. You start with 10 players and play down to 5, at which point everyone receives double your buy-in. If you buy-in for $1.08 then if you make the top 5 you are paid out $2.

In essence you are risking $1.08 to win 92 cents.

I make this out to mean you have to win 54% of the time to break even.

0.92x = (1-x)(1.08 )

Have I figured this properly?

Then, if I have 40% rakeback on tournament fees, I am really risking $1.05 (rounded) to win 92 cents, yes? For 53.3% break even requirement?
Peace,
Bull

I play the turbos at Stars. 50+2. Roi of 5% is very good--that's what I averaged last year.. At 20+.08 I was like 8% ROI. Way way way more fish at much lower limits of course.

Suggest you look at some of the double or nothing threads here under SnGs. I've posted a lot, mostly early last year.

Also a couple of very good threads at 2+2 if you can stomach weeding through the 90% of it that is pure garbage or worse.

Very tricky game these DoNs. Very challenging.

First lesson: 1st in equity is just HUGE HUGE HUGE. Beware of calling with AK when neither you or villain is desperate. Recipe for disaster.

Second lesson. Late position pushes at or near the bubble are advisable. Don't let yourself get too low. However at your stakes the villains probably call way way too much, so not as good as against better players. Still a must strategy. Don't get too low even if you are not the low man. So fun when you push 53o get called by AKs and river a 3. 8) 8)

Good luck Bull!

Not likely to play too many of these, but the concept was new to me and I was a bit intrigued by the math. I did play a couple of the micros yesterday as my internet connection here was flagging and I didn't want to get into any cash games with the time outs going on. I cashed 2 of 3, fwiw. I think your observations of the play style are true even at the lowest buy-ins, except that we started with at least two knuckleheads every game and they went quickly to the rail playing trash. Then it got very tight and predictable.

I haven't been on 2+2 forums since 2005.

Never answered the question but like Pauli said the math is impeccable naturally.

The first thing I thought of when looking at the DoNs was the 11-10 on football sides. I know this is 52.3% to break even.

So my turbo DoN was 52 to win 48, that's about 54 to win 50 so a little better than the football.

The non turbo DoN at Stars is 54 to win 46. Ugh, that's 58 to win 50 roughly so a bit worse than football.

Then add in your perks to see how much closer you get.

When you get older you avoid equations unless you are boxed into a corner.

This is exactly how I looked at it, too. :D
