ICM Calculators

Postby chillin411 » May 16 2005

Just for those who are getting started with ICM, it's probably a good idea to post the links to a few ICM calculators out there, so you aren't stuck doing it all out by pen and paper.

The first one is the one most people use, written by dethgrind from 2+2:
http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~sharnett/ICM/ICM.html
This one has a good explanation of ICM, it's run in javascript so it's quite fast, and there's a lot of nice additional material.

I've also written one myself:
http://www.chillin411.com/icmcalc.php
While I don't have much of the math or discussion, mine works for the multi-table SnGs as well as the single table ones, and I think mine's prettier

Just thought I'd share the two, so we both have the links in a central location, and those who are looking to learn ICM can start fiddling around with them.
Everything's going to be worth ten points someday.

Sorry for being so ignorant. When and how do I use this? Are there some articles out there I could read?

Great thread, this is good stuff. Been grumbling about the lack of true math on poker

If I understand this correctly it is basically a method of post play analysis then? Is there anyone who can plug in all the relevant data within the 30 seconds given to act?

In a word, yes. Sometimes, in NL tourneys, you make calls which will double you up or send you home (as you well know...no patronizing intended).

ICM can help you analyze whether or not your call, of what is usully an all-in situation, was correct.

Thanks for this answer on lcall's question as I had the same question.

I read all these things to calculate and weigh (not only this ICM thing) and most of the times I think how one would be able to do all that in the time that he has.

Sometimes the situation even asks for a quick response and no real analysis can be done at all and it's all up to judgment by experience IMO.

Although you certainly can't do the ICM calculations in your head, you can spend time playing around with different situations and learn some interesting things. You will find that there are situations where you should call with damn near any two cards and fold with damn near any two cards. Once you've run a lot of these, you will find that you recognize situations live. I see people fold all the time in late stages of SnGs to a reraise all-in when there is absolutely no chance they should fold even if they had 72o.
