The River Barrel

Postby avi » Dec 19 2009

How about barreling this river? I'm talking about being commited, and the likelyhood that villain will call given board and plethora of missed draws. Assume standard unknown at lower limits.

Can you fold out a better hand? I doubt it. The check on the flop shows weakness, the bet on the turn can be simply trying to take it down as a semibluff (which it was). Also he has the chip lead and so it's even more likely you can not get him to laydown the best hand. The 5 on the river didn't help you, and he knows it.

I know this is lower stakes and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to opponent's thought process, but still....

I check.

I think you played it fine up to the river. I also would check behind here as your A-high will often be good enough to win.

As Chris says, you are unlikely to get a better hand to fold. He will probably call most reasonable bets with any pair, even a 2.

You are also unlikely to get a call from any lower high-card hand that you beat, so best just to check.

Cheers
