playing a 50 BB stack

Postby quadaces9999 » Aug 13 2009

I have very limited experience playing 6 max NLH.
<br />

<br />
Being a beginner Would playing a 50 BB stack benefit me instead of playing a 100 BB stack ?
<br />
Would i be bluffed at less because of having a 50 BB stack instead of a 100BB?
<br />

<br />
I just feel like i could get to showdown more with a 50 BB stack or i can weigh stack to pot ratio vs villains hand range to get in in more confidently as it limits the ability for villain to use bluffs against me effectively.

I tend to attack people more when they buy in short. It looks like they are scared money.
<br />

<br />
That being said i tend to be more aware too when they 3 bet/shove as they are risking a larger portion of thier stack and i dunno if someone short stacking a game is gonna 3 bet bluff as often. I also think you give away a lot of EV sitting with less then max on a NL table. Sucks to hit your set and double up to max stack when you could have been at double max instead.
<br />

<br />
any other thoughts?

For a beginner it can be real tough playing 100bb. Your going to get bluffed at quite a bit and taken off your hand compared to the times you hit your set.
<br />

<br />
If you are a good player then no doubt you rather play deep.
<br />

<br />
With 50 bb i can still bluff and i also dont mind taking my stack to the end if i have a good hand and villain has a wide range. Im going to look him up and not be scared at all. If villian is tight then i will give his bets more credit But usually when villian is tight i can steal from him more often.

I just noticed that Tom Durrrr Dwan buys is for 50BB when he sits down on full tilt.
<br />

<br />
I think Gus Hansen also buys in for 50BB.
<br />

<br />
IF they were so good why wouldent they buy in for 100bb like patrick antonius or others do?

I have just finished reading PNLHE (Ed Miller et al) and one of the implications of what is said in the book is that playing with a 50bb is much easier than 100bb. The reason is that it is easier to decide whether to commit with a particular hand with a 50bb stack, as the pot on the flop will generally be a greater proportion of your stack. This in turn means it is harder for you to be bluffed with a 50bb stack, especially with strong single pair type hands, which are usually not strong enough to commit a 100bb stack with on the flop. Since much of your preflop range aims to hit top pair type hands, playing with a 50bb stack will present you with fewer difficult decisions than a 100bb stack.

There are way less tough river decisions with a 50bb stack vs. 100bb, and people will pay you off lighter when you hit a monster. But more money to be made 100bb deep.
