Actually he played it pretty well. He didn't want to raise earlier because he didn't want a fold. On the river he didn't want it checked through. If I was him I may have played this hand the same way. I may also have played this hand that way if I had nothing, although with nothing I would be more likely to c/r the turn and try to steal it there

By C/r the turn I'd also be more likely to get a fold from something like 55 when the river comes along (if he called the turn bet).
Now steals using this are not something I do all the time, but I do do things like this occasionally, and I don't even mind getting caught. I'll normally only do it when I'm showing down a lot of winners to start with, and if I get caught it just keeps them guessing. I'll also back off from bluffs for a while after getting caught.
But with the 55 I still call here, the way the hand played out, because the opportunity for steals at this point is just too high.
