Fenris78 still playing limit?

Postby mconstab » Oct 22 2008

I remember when I used to browse the forums yourself and Willem used to swap 6max limit ideas. I think you were playing 5/10 and up back then. I'm just curious really, are you still playing limit?

Hi mconstab

I still browse the forums here from time to time but mostly don't respond to threads anymore. Usually Willem is saying all there is to be said about a posted hand anyway and all I could add was "Yes, I agree" ;)

Regarding, your question: No, I don't play LHE 6max anymore. I have started to play LHE HU some time ago and found it to be so much more profitable than 6max. Also, this year was very rough for me as I hit a downswing both in poker and in my private life which caused me to take a longer break from poker. 2-3 months ago I came back and started playing NL 6max and I am enjoying it so much more than LHE that I am not sure I will ever go back. I still play some HU Limit and sometimes 3-4handed games but no full 6max tables anymore.

Thanks for replying.

Have you found 6max NL to be more profitable than your limit days? I'm seriously considering quitting limit 6max but I have no idea as to what game to try. I've dabbled a bit with HU limit but I get the feeling a lot of other 6max limit regulars have this same idea. PLO is pretty appealling to me at the moment and I may go down that route.

Yes, I find NL 6max a lot more profitable. It's a lot easier to exploit fish in NL because of being able to bet bigger. Also, there are much more weak and completely clueless players to be found at the NL tables. I am currently playing NL400 up to NL1000 on Cake and even with basic NL knowledge you can beat these games when you practice good table selection and avoid tangling with the good regulars.

From what I have read, PLO and HU NL are goldmines, but both are very swingy. I am definitely planning to learn NL HU next as many experts seem to agree NL HU is like printing money (that is if you are realy good at it). Also, Limit HU can be very profitable if you put in some time to work out a good strategy.

Oink over at 2+2 reckons that PLO sucks as well, he recommends NLHE.

So my choice is between NLHE, HU limit, or a combination of both. I've put a lot of effort into trying to be a winner at 5/10 6max limit over the last few months but the edges appear to be so small in that game now that I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

I've not played one hand of NLHE in my life so it's kind of daunting learning it from scratch. Oh well, I'm going to give it a shot.

I see your playing at the midstakes already, did it take you long to learn NL and work your way up?

Yes, I put a lot of effort too into my LHE game and I can understand your feelings at this point. At least I can assure you that you can profit from your LHE experience when learning NL. Hand reading, reading player types, assessing board textures, spotting bluffing opportunities and other stuff will come in handy when learning NL.

I started playing NL maybe 3 months ago and it didn't take me long at all to learn it. I played less than 10k hands at NL100 and NL200 before moving up, since I already had the bankroll for NL400. I don't want to advertise certain video training sites here, but all I can say is: If you really want to learn NL 6max forget the books. There are no good books for short-handed NL which is probably one of the reasons why these games are still so profitable. I don't want to say PNL or HOC are bad, but they won't teach you how to become really profitable in 6max games.

Also, I would never play NL on Full Tilt, because the games are so incredible tough with all those 8-tabling data-mining nitty TAGs. Yes, it's possible to grind out a profit vs those guys but it's not worth tangling with nits who will only pay off your big hands when you cooler them. I doubt I could beat NL400 or even NL200 on FT but I don't care as long as I can make a tidy profit on another site. I prefer to look for games with bad players who pay off too much.

First you should look to get a good foundation in solid TAG play and as you open up your game you need to learn how to deal with preflop aggression, being aggressive yourself in the right spots preflop, next knowing how and when to make moves post flop.

If you like I can help you out a bit when you want to get started and show you some basic stuff and rail you a bit. Just PM me if you are interested. Yet, there is no substitution for video training sites if you ask me.

I haven't been on for a while and was going to ask some of the same questions that are in this thread. I quit playing limit approx 12 months ago and I was going to ask if anybody played limit anymore and where or is it officially dead?

I also think NL is more profitable (although I have heard good things about Limit Heads up if you know what your doing, but it takes so much concentration and the variance I think can be brutal?)

Anyway, I was just reading through some of my old posts (not that I have that many of them, I was more of a lurker than a poster... although its good to recognise most of the 'old' names) and I enjoy the mathematical/certainity of limit as opposed to NL (which is still mathematical but there's a hell of a lot more factors to take into account).

I think there are a lot more fish in NL these days as the previous posts say its harder to exploit 'bad' play in limit than it is in NL and a lot of them that play seem to think that NL is the only form of poker 'cause thats what they've seen on TV.

Don't know if they still run the poker leagues here but it would be good to play some 6 max limit for fun, say on Pokerstars or somewhere. I'd be up for arranging a time and a place if anyone fancies a game for 'nominal' type sums. Cause I miss it and it would be good to dust of my 6 max 'brain' :D

If you fancy it post below :)

Ha just noticed this thread again. Looks like I was ready to learn NL cash at the end of 08 but I didn't actually start until the end of 09, think I spent a few months dabbling in SNGs and MTTs. Funny how Fen advised me to play at any site other than FTP and that's pretty much the only site I've played at!
