Poker Tracker article for Beginners

Darvon has written a good article on Poker Tracker titled Tracking Your Progress As a Beginner

Darvon!

Thanks a bunch for this! I finally know what VP$IP stands for!

Thanks for posting the link to the article. It was a huge help. I just want to add one correction. PokerTracker does read hand histories from PokerRoom's downloaded software. I actually find it to be the easiest site to get hand histories from because it does not require you to order hand histories through email.

Good read... when I started with PT I picked up bits and pieces from different places all over. It was hard understanding it all and mixing all the info together so it's nice to see it all laid out in 1 article!

Thanks Matt and Terry,

Great article on Poker Tracker. I have tracked 2,500 hands since 11/1/2004 so far and below are my current stats. I am not a real beginner since I have been playing for almost 2 years live and 3 weeks on the internet. I still have a lot to learn.

Like when to fold'em. Old dog takes longer to learn new tricks.

VP$IP - High - 26% (Take a lot of folding to bring this down).
W$WSF - 34%
PFR% - 6.5% - naturally aggressive
W$SD - 52%
BB/100 - 1.00

:)

Poker Tracker will improve my game. I have only had the product about a week and I love it. Wish I had these stats live.
Sure wish I knew when to fold'em. Oh, Kenny please tell me when. :)

FYI - I play at Empire Poker (Party Poker) and they put the hand histories on my hard disk. I import them with 2 clicks of the mouse.

Still a bit confuced

Postby Crymfytr » Jan 21 2005

I have downloaded Poker Tracker and imported my HH from my PP account. I see all this data and can't seem to make heads or tails of it. If any of you can give some insights on trying to figure out where my holes are I would appreciate it. I seem to understand the 5 main areas, but I don't have clue of how to dicfer the rest.

I was looking around in my PT and found a nice feature that is an eye opener.

On the general tab for player stats use the filters for known starting hands. Set the following

"Not a Blind" and "Put Money In" and "Folded before the showdown".

At .5/1 and 1/2 I lose about $1.53 per hand. Not very good. It filtered 591 hands out of 5,808 hands.

I am still winning but I could do better with starting hand selection. The filter does not tell how much was lost folding the flop or the turn. It would be nice to know how much was lost just to see the flop. You can guess by looking at the avg/hand.

My worst hand is KJo. Figures to be a long term loser.

I found it interesting.

Pokertracker stats

Postby Rasputin » Jul 18 2005

This is for Matthew, I would like to know what some of your percentages are for some of the key stats. Specifically VP$IP, W$WSF, %WSD and the % of flops seen that went to showdown (I can't remember the initials for this one). I know it is limit dependent, but I'm interested in how many wins you get without going to showdown.

Very interesting article and has given me encouragement that my playing seems similar to the stats talked of, despite me currently considering myself a break even player at $1/$2 and $2/$4. I can't seem to make that break into profit, keep on hovering around zero. But maybe I'm just not getting the luck of the cards lately.

Anyway, I was wondering what about the other stats for a good player, things like fold % to a blind steal, and so on?

Are these statistical targets as applicable to NL as they are to Limit?

NL is definately different. There are many 'acceptable' styles in NL play. I would make a new post in the NL forum asking about PT stats and targets, I really know very little about NL.

Good-luck,
