One million hands in a year

Postby Llanlad » Nov 28 2008

Is it possible for someone like me to actually play that amount of hands in a year .

I know its a lot of hands, but im sure many do it .. !

Its just whether someone like me could actually do it ...

I feel like taking up a fresh challenge in January ... although id settle for 500-750k hands ..

In todays climate where everyone is struggling .. the option of making decent money from poker is too good of a opportunity to miss out on ..

The only thing that stops me doing this is my emotions ... surely i can sort this out for the sake of making some decent money ..

Not everyone can make money in poker .. but i do .. and it seems silly to waste such an opportunity ..

Anyone care to estimate how many hands i will play next year ? :D

Im even drinking tea as i write this :?

As far as I can see, a goodly proportion of Supernova Elites on Stars are at such limits that they need 2M hands or more.

Its just whether someone like me could actually do it ...

Well that is something else...

Likewise I'm looking for some sort of sustained chase next year (within the realms of possibility given the amount of time, tables and limits I play). Will be nearer the 150-200k hand mark for me though

It seems to me that so long as you don't stop playing for a sustained period when you get hacked off, you'll be fine. You seem to stop (and fill up VRR) rather than playing for a long time on monkey tilt, which is good - but you then seem to find it difficult to get back on the horse (right)?

Anyone care to estimate how many hands i will play next year ? :D

I'll challenge you to do half a million. Heckling rights or other non-financial stakes (possibly something to do with sigs?)

Yup that basically hits the nail on the head ....in fact thats so spot on, its worries me that you know me so well :D

This is not really about money .. its about the feeling of failure ... ive made enough money to say .. i have not failed ..

But i still think ive failed in poker ... i really do .. and it nags the hell out of me if im honest ..I have to scratch this itch once and for all .. otherwise ill never let it go ..

I need to prove to myself ( and to a lesser extent ) you lot  that i can actually do this ..

Sounds like a good idea ... we will have to agree on how many hands we both could manage to play in a calender year ..and graphs etc to prove it !!

I'm still thinking about a realistically doable yet challenging target for me. I will play exclusively on Stars. I think it should be that I'll make GoldStar each and every month next year, possibly making Platinum once throughout the year. I thought about a pop at Supernova but it's realistically out of reach without one or two radical changes (8+ tables, a significant move up in limits and/or devoting literally every spare moment to poker) none of which are gonna happen.

All of that implies a total of roughly 150k hands, maybe less if I move up from where I am now. Reaching Platinum implies a 30k hand month which is a big big ask for me, but I'll leave it in there as the cherry on top of the challenge. The challenge as stated is also simple and easy to administer... :D

Whatever you decide as a reasonable number of hands is fine for your end of the challenge... but 500k is a minimum I think

I suggest find another goal.....Im going to be playing close to that many hands this year, and there are times when you just dont feel like playing but you have to make your goal. You will enjoy the game much more if you arent tied to it.

and yes it is very possible to play that many hands.

Thats my problem really ... I will always find something / ANYTHING to do not to play poker sometimes, well most of the time !

Its amazing how i can keep myself busy doing nothing sometimes :?

There are frankly ... too many people on here that have over taken me when it comes to their poker achievments .. and although i dont for a single moment begrudge anyone their success, i feel this is is partly because they have put far more time and effort into poker than i have ....

And for that reason alone ... being a very competitive person .. this gets my goat up ..

Anyone .. even me can achive anything if they put the time and effort into something ..

Its stuff like this that has allways bothered me ..

Ive not played for days and on my return within 172 hands im down nearly 3 buy ins :?

I pushed a flopped flush and gut shot straight draw .. but missed
I hit a Q flush on the river and lost to a A flush .
QJ beat my AQ when he called me down and rivered the J
Flopped a set with 99 and someone with a flush draw called my turn push and hit.
and the same can be said for my KK, again the flush hit the river ..

I even flopped quads and had no action against a UTG raiser.

Its scenarios like this that made me put an end to a session and then leave it for another few days.

This is the cycle i need to break ... but it dont help when i decide to play after not playing for days and this crap happening straight away :D

at the end of 2004 ... all of 2005 and the begining of 2006 I played 4 tables of 3/6 for between 6 and 14 hours a day (average 8 hours) on most days (and I mean most) in those 15 months and played about 800k hands

good luck with your quest

So shall we have an official challenge thread then? I will set it up - and I suggest the best place for it is Vent, Rant and Rave :D

I will be playing upto 16 tables by February ... bb/100 hands might come down .. but thats not really the issue .. just want to be able to play a lot without reacting to it :D

Playing 16 tables with the auto-rebuy feature on you probably won't even know if you won or lost any specific hand (though I still manage to know until I hit the 19 mark). Really it's all about evaluating your play. Yes sometimes you don't want to play, but then you do and you're like "holy shit this is fun" or you start making bad plays and decide to quit. The key is really to be able to objectively rate your own play - not just on a single hand but on a bunch of hands.

You'll need to play ~11 hours a week to get 500k hands in a year 16-tabling (FR I assume) which when you think about it isn't too bad.

I think I played on the order of 700k hands at 100NL over the last year (not including MTTs, limit, or any of the other stuff that I've played), and I basically took 2-3 months off so it's very doable.

I suggest find another goal.....Im going to be playing close to that many hands this year, and there are times when you just dont feel like playing but you have to make your goal. You will enjoy the game much more if you arent tied to it.

I thought you were SNE? You really only need to play 500k hands in a year at 5/10 for that to happen?
