US Gaming industry softening?

Postby janeg » Oct 04 2010

Casinos Now See Online Gambling As A Better Bet

"...the American Gaming Association, issued a statement in the spring suggesting that online gambling could be properly regulated — the first public indication that its hard-line stance was softening."

"Gambling specialists said it was likely that any casino-supported legalization would be limited to Internet poker because it was considered the least threatening to brick-and-mortar casinos. Internet poker already had the backing of some in the casino industry, and was seen as a new and lucrative source of revenue for the casino companies. "

"Mr. Fahrenkopf, of the casino trade association, said that his group started about two years to look closely at a number of issues involved in Internet gambling, including taxation, online security and consumer protection.

He said that the big turnabout came when a study by a panel of industry officials concluded that online poker would not cut casino profits to the degree some operators had feared. "

Left unsaid is the casino industry would support online poker if it was offered by them.

I've never quite understood the b&m stance against online gambling in the us. Here in the uk most online platforms are operated by land based gambling operations as a highly profitable extension of their land based business

Admittedly most operators are bookmakers rather than casino groups but online gaming is an excellent cross selling opportunity

Well said!! Let's see what the next few years bring. I've always felt that it would take a push by the major casino lobby in the US to get online gaming going.

Casino lobbying for online poker? Hopefully they can do something to assist in the process, but what benefit would it have for them. If people continued to got to their favorite sites instead of the casinos for poker - don't they lose money on the deal. What incentive would they have. I hope that is not a dumb point, but I was wondering that.

There are a whole plethora of things live poker rooms and casinos can get out of online poker rooms. Let's take Harrah's, for instance.

1. They own the World Series. They could start charging online rooms for the right to run satellites to the World Series.
2. They could run satellites on a Harrah's Online site for the WSOP and any number of other "special tournaments" .
3. Play at Harrah's Online and attain "widget" status and get a 2 night stay in a spa room as well as 3 meals a day for two.

This would be such a freaking goldmine for the brick and mortar rooms and casinos as well as the government.

I believe that Harrah's already did number two through WSOP.com. I know they did some kind of promotion tied into the November Nine, but I joined too late to take part in it. Given the change in climate from when they started the online room just a few months ago to the climate now, I wonder where it will go from here. How can they hope to make any money especially if they started offering seats to land based tournaments?
