Godfather Of Poker

Postby Doc T River » Dec 21 2009

I just read a news story about this book on Card Player's website and I don't understand something. In the book, Doyle admits to throwing the 1972 WSOP Main Event (the one that Amarillo Slim "won") which I knew, but Doyle said that he dumped chips to Slim. In the past, Doyle said that he was allowed to take his chips off the table and go home. If that was the case, he had no chips to dump. Is he saying it was a sham from the get go?

Guess I am headed back to the bookstore to look at the book. I saw it on the shelf yesterday and I won't be buying it just yet. For a hardcover, it has some of the worst paper I have ever seen. The pages are cut uneven and I have found that makes for an unenjoyable read. I will wait until the paperback to buy it.

Doy'e's original excuse was that he had a stomach problem - digestion related. But years later he admitted that the real reason he wanted to quit was that he didn't want to be on Sports Illustrated where his friends and family would find out that he was a poker pro.

You see. At the time, pros were looked down on unlike today where they have become celebs.
