Dimat in conjunction with PokerTek are running two campaigns on 2+2 this month. One is PLO in June in Vegas and another from the 10th to 17th promotes Jeff's release party on the 18th and his new book. We're hoping to promote the tourney/release party on the 18th for a good turnout.
Matthew "It's not about the hand you put your opponent on, it's about how you think he will play that hand."
What I loved is Mason saying that the authors of the book under discussion, meaning Small Stakes No Limit Hold'em, are welcome to respond to posts about their book. I guess he forgot that he banned Matt Flynn.
I also loved how he invited comments and then locked the thread! It is now unlocked and has been made a sticky. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke

New Poker Book?I'm just putting the finishing touches on a poker book that should eliminate buying hundreds poker books. It took me over tens years of going through the best poker books ever written and recording their best Strategies, Tactics, Concepts, and Ploys.
I also included some of the best poker quotes ever written, most never seen before outside of their original source. I'm not sure what to call the book yet, but I'll, or some editor, will think of something.

Look for it soon, somewhere...hopefully.

Terrence "VP Pappy" Murphy

A few examples from the book:

To be a Successful Player, You Must…

1. Read hands and opponents.
2. Identify different types of opponents.
3. Know pot odds.
4. Know how to bet different sizes.
5. Know which hands to play and how to play them.
6. Fully understand position.
7. Know the different strategies.
8. Know when to push and when to back off.
9. Understand stack size and how they relate.
10. Know how to control your emotions.

"Women players, typically, are tense, beady-eyed, chain-smoking ladies, perched asymmetrically among the men, handbags between their feet under the table."
--David Spanier, Total Poker

Throwing junk hands away should be automatic and require very little thought.

Don't give up on a hand with cards to come if the pot is large. You are probably getting the right odds to call.

When a pot is raised and re-raised, it usually means a big pair, like A-A or K-K. Fold everything but those hands.

If a re-raise comes from one of the blinds…Beware!

A call says, “I'm hoping to hit something on the flop.â€

Doc,

I don't think publishing poker strategies would be considered plagiarism or every poker book ever written would be sued by the first person who ever wrote a strategy in a book. And using quotes is not either (see The Quotable Gambler, by Paul Lyons).

I have four personal, thick notebooks filled with thousands of strategies, tactics, tips, concepts, and ploys collected over my 60 years or so of playing poker that I used as my source. They are filled with everything I've learned about poker (lately Texas Hold'em exclusively) from books, to interviewing pro poker players, and playing the game myself.

Terrence "VP Pappy" Murphy

"When you take stuff from one writer it's plagiarism; but when you take it from many writers, it's research."
--Wilson Mizer (1876-1933)

He may have 101 moves, but I have 3,000. to 4,000 moves on 317 pages(I've never counted them all). And a lot of them are my own strategies, tactics, concepts, and ploys that have never been published before.
I'll probably never get this book published anyway, so it's a moot point. All the publishers seem to want a big, recognizable name. It's a shame because I firmly believe that this book can turn the average losing player into a winner.
I just wish I had acess to this kind of knowledge when I first started playing the game many years ago, maybe I'd have been a bigger winner. No big deal, I had a ball putting it together.

PS: I mostly just play for small buy-ins and freerolls now, usually on Absolute Poker. My patience ain't what it used to be and my nerves are shot.

PS: PS: I've already sold some printed out copies to several of my poker buddies, so I have a sorta best seller...that is for me.

Good luck to you,

Terrence "VP Pappy" Murphy

"Never raise a hand to your children...slow-play the little bastards!" --VP Pappy

Doc,

Yea, I know all about Print On Demand and all the self-publishing services that are available to writers, but I'm not going to just give this book away to a few people for a few sales here and there. That doesn't interest me. If some publisher doesn't pick it up, then so be it. I told my wife to just toss it, and any othe books that I've written, into the casket when they bury me.

And about "hijacking this thread." Geeze! You make it sound like I did something criminal, or at least unethical. This thread is about poker books isn't it? And I have a poker book, don't I? I just wanted to talk to some people about what they thought about this kind of book that I'm proposing. You have given me some food for thought, and I thank you for it. And besides, this thread was dead and going nowhere.

And about Absolute Poker: I only play the lower limits anyway, and who's going to go through the all the bother of cheating for a measly $25 payoff or lower? I like Absolute's graphics, the friendly players I find there, and the fact that there's a 9:15 freeroll every morning (my regular routine with coffee and donuts) with a chance to get into a bigger game if you finish in the top 30, which I do a lot (I'll be in next Saturday's 3:15 bonus game)

Gotta go. I'm semi-retired (aerospace optician doing contract work off and on) and working on another "probably never to be published" poker book at the moment. It's my morning therapy, along with playing at least one hold'em tournament each day and taking notes.

PS: Although you probably won't agree, I think that making the final table in a big freeroll (Poker Stars--9000 players) is harder to do than making the final table in the WSOP, because you need more luck than skill, what with all the callers, no matter how much you bet.

Terrence "VP Pappy" Murphy

"Buying and reading a lot of poker books can get very expensive, but then again, so can losing.â€

Doc,

I too have well over a hundred books on poker, and several hundred more on gambling in general.

I'll end this sorta hijacked thread and start a new one on some of those books.

Terrence "VP Pappy" Murphy

“Great poker players talk about theories and concepts; Good players talk about strategies and ploys; Average players talk about winning and losing; Poor players talk about their bad beats.â€
