Seaprating bankrolls?

Postby MiXeR » Feb 13 2011

Hello,

I play, like many others, Hold`em Limit, NL and torunaments, so I m not sure how to proper manage my bankroll? Should I separate it or at least separate torunaments from cash games? But if I separate "cash bankroll" on limit and NL that would reduce it and I should play lower stakes? I sometimes play simultaneously limit and NL so for now I see my bankroll like one for both games and that way I can play higher stakes:P:), but not sure if that`s OK? I definitly consider to separate tournament bankroll from cash bankroll?
Any advices, thoughts, explanations, etc. would be appriciated.

Thank You!

You don't want to separate your bankroll based on what game you play, but rather look at it as a whole.

First thing to figure out is how much of a bankroll you need across all spectrums. You'll also need to consider your flexibility when it comes to bankrolls. What I mean by flexibility is:

1. Can you replace your bankroll without affecting your livelihood? If so you can play a bit looser and higher.
2. Can you replace a hit on your bankroll, but keep playing until you do? You want a nice, firm bankroll commitment.
3. Will losing your bankroll see you no longer able to play poker? You're number one priority in this case is protecting your bankroll.

So where do we go from here?

Figuring out where your bankroll lies. Let's assume you are in the middle. You can take a hit and add some funds and rebuild. In other words, you want to be somewhat protective of your bankroll, but if you do need to rebuild, a timely deposit will set you straight.

For someone like this, you'd want to play within the following limits:

400 Big Bets for Limit Holdem
25 Buy-ins for NLHE
45 Buy-ins for SnGs
100 buy-ins for tournaments

With a $500 bankroll this means you want to keep limited to [and below]:

$0.50/$1 for Limit Holdem
$20 maximum buy-ins for NLHE - NL 20
$10+$1 for single table SnGs
$4.40 buy-ins for tournaments [you could dabble in $5.50 tourneys as well]

If you are more protective or more inclined to replace losses, you can adjust these up or down. The key is to be consistent. Don't adjust your commitments up or down on a whim but rather with foresight and planning with an eye towards keeping your bankroll safe.

What about other types of Sit and Gos?

Jennifear has an excellent blog post for SnGs and MTTs:

http://www.pocketfives.com/f7/sng-multi ... de-378221/

Broken down:

65 buy-ins for Single table
90 buy-ins for 18-man
108 buy-ins for 27-man
128 buy-ins for 45-man
150 buy-ins for 90-man
200 buy-ins for 180-man and tournaments

As you profit [or lose], you need to adjust your buy-ins accordingly. Cash outs and redeposits count also.

Last suggestion. Don't increase what limit or buy-in you play at after making a deposit. Make sure you have beaten the lesser buy-ins before making that move.

Good Luck
