First time at a new limit

Postby Dogs » Dec 19 2009

Whilst we were away, I went on a bit of a hot streak and my BR reached the dizzy heights of $1500: enough for 30 buy-ins at 50NL. So I'm having a stab.

Having moved up, I obviously have no history at the new limit, and so if I start off poorly it won't be completely clear to me whether it's natural variance or if I'm simply not good enough. So I'm curious: when you move up to try out a new level, how many buy-ins do you allow yourself before moving back down? Is it the 'full' amount (i.e. if you're working off a 30 BI strategy, do you keep going until you drop to 30 BI for the limit below), or do you employ a stop loss sooner whilst you try to work out if you're being pwned at the higher level?

This is a hypothetical question at present, and hopefully will stay that way. :-)

Particularly if the limit is doubling, I'm not waiting to halve my bankroll before moving back down. In the situation as presented, I think I'd be getting itchy at 5BI down and moving back down at or before losing 10BI.

But then I've always been a BR nit. :?

I generally am conservative with regards to NL cash games. I like 50 BIs per level, but if 30 BIs is workable for you, no problem. I'll generally take a shot at a higher BI level when I have the 50 BIs for a couple of BIs and if it goes south I'll go back down.

I usually move up for good [at least that is the intent] when I am 20% up on the level. In my case I build in a cushion of 10 BIs when I'm in the 'probationary' period. Dropping my requirements down to 50 BIs when I start to feel comfortable. In your case, 20% would be 6 extra BIs.

In limit [usually only play to work off bonuses], it all about 300 BBs regardless of limit level.
