Stud Hi: high card/straight draw hand pairs door card

Postby Holgininho » Jul 29 2007

What do you think about calling 3rd street here? I thought a call was justified, given that I had two overcards to my opponents' door cards, a one-gapped 3-straight and a live two flush. Raising would have been a mistake though, because people don't like to fold 3rd street in these games.

What do you think of the double bet on 4th? Any reason not to double bet?

What about the river bet? Would check/call have been the better line without a read on my opponent?

Not sure I would have played this hand, but if so I think it would be better to raise. The 6 probably would not fold, but there is a good chance it would be headsup.

AFAIK a double bet is fine, I don't know any particular reason you would want to keep it cheap there.

I would have bet 6th street - unlikely villian is going for the check-raise here, and I don't want to give a free card to a flush draw or a better two pair draw.

Betting the river may be a mistake - I still think a c/r is unlikely, I don't think you will get called by many hands that you beat - probably only a smaller two pair, but you have two of the 9s, a 5 was dead on 3rd; if villian has two pair there is a good chance it is Aces up and you lose (although he probably would have bet that). When betting on the end with no hand to "protect" any more, you have to not only think it is more likely you are best, but that you will _still_ be more likely to be best even when called.

Honestly, I don't know why I checked 6th. I played the hand yesterday and didn't even look at my action on 6th before posting, because I was sure I had bet. Why would I check 6th, but bet 7th?

Edit: Now I know why I checked 6th - I wasn't sure what hand he had started with, but it was very unlikely he had two clubs in the hole. I figured he had some pair, and the ace was a scare card. So I thought he probably would bet, if I checked to him. I thought I'd check, because one bet would go in anyway. When he didn't I decided to bet 7th street. Flawed thinking I suppose.

I agree, that the river bet was a mistake. He might call with two small pair, but won't call with one pair.

Also I can see your point in raising 3rd. I was quite frustrated at the time, because I virtually never ended up heads-up. It might have worked here though.
