Learning different games

Postby Radford » Aug 20 2007

Hi. For all of you that don't know me, i play NL Holdem. That's the only game i've ever played. I kind of know the rules to Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Seven Card Stud and Razz, but have in no way gone into any depth about these types of games.

Ok, so lately i have been experimenting on PokerStars playing some $2.20 headsup matches in all of these games. My question is, is where can i find good books, sources, articles, websites that can help me learn the basics and give me a little more insight into these types of games because i want to start playing these games more reguarly.

It seems when i play, i find Omaha Hi/Lo much easier to playing Razz. I don't know why, but it's probably because Omaha is still like playing No Limit Holdem. The only exception is that you are able to make a low hand too.

Thanks, Chris.

There's stuff out there on all the various games check out 2+2 as they have specific forums for some of these games.

I would just say that if you want to learn any of these games, playing headsup is not the way to go. Pretty much any game is vastly different when headsup than on a full table, and any skills you may learn here will not likely translate to full games.

I've been hearing good things about the Full Tilt book's sections on Omaha Hi and the HORSE games. Hellmuth is decent for an overview.

From there:

Omaha Hi/Lo - Krieger/Tanner, Cappelletti
Omaha Hi - Slotboom
Razz - Sklansky on Poker
Stud Hi/Lo - Zee

I'm also thinking of broadening my range of games, having played thousands of NL: SnGs and many thousands of LHE and NLHE cash game hands.

If I'm going to do this it'll be using the same rationale as every other time I've tried a new game - i.e.: start at the micro limits and only move up when I've proved (by winning!!) that I can beat that level and am ready to move up. I reckon I'll start with omaha as this is less of a transition from HE (comments on this assumption welcome)

So, where would you guys recommend playing where there is decent micro traffic for PLO or O8? Also, given that these games are far less popular than HE, does this mean that the majority of players are semi serious, therefore making the games tougher to beat? Or is it a case that if you can do some reading, take it in and apply the concepts then you have a much greater edge than in HE?

Thanks guys
Scully

If you want to play some PLO, you may want to look on partypoker. Their PLO25 are all full ring, as opposed to mostly 6-max games on the other sites. You can be tighter in full ring games, playing only strong hands. This is a whole lot easier than 6-max, where you cannot fold every marginal hand. These low-limit PLO games are pretty soft, assuming you put in enough effort to really learn the game.
The road to poker enlightenment is paved with every conceivable FPS move.

I played 7card stud hi for a while and I found Roy West's book (and his articles to be a great foundation).

Since then, I've been playing NL holdem and draw poker, for which H Yardley's classic 'The Education of a Poker Player' made it's cost price within about a day. :D
Slade: How the hell did you know I didn't have the king or the ace?
Lancey Howard: I recollect a young man putting the same question to Eddie the Dude. "Son," Eddie told him, "all you paid was the looking price. Lessons are extra."

I also started playing World of Warcraft and I really really like it. At the beginning I thought I wouldn't like it but it is great.

Agreed. But mostly holdem related - both limit and no limit.
