Social Media apps

Postby kinnipak » Jan 14 2012

Which one do you prefer? Which ones have you tried and given thumbs down?

The Big 3 are Twitter, Facebook, and Google+

I myself use Twitter mostly with FB a close second.

Finally got on G+ and am bumping my way around...hearing how it is better than FB but dont know enough about it yet to say I like it better than FB...

What say ye?

I have no idea what Twitter is for. Seriously.

Facebook works fine for me. Haven't yet touched G+, no particular interest in doing so really.

I like the technology of G+ the best, but there isn't the same critical mass of people as Facebook. I rarely look at Twitter any more.

I use Facebook a fair bit, although I wouldn't say I was totally enamoured with it.

I am not really sure what the point is of Twitter, it just seems like Facebook just with 90% of the functionality removed. But enough people like it so it must have something going for it.

Haven't tried G+. As usual with 'new product competing with existing behemoth', some people claim it's infinitely better than Facebook, some claim it's rubbish, both groups seemingly on principle rather than giving any actual reasons. Much like Linux.

the big difference bewteen FB and twitter is that FB you choose who can see your stuff whereas on Twitter people follow you... yes you can block but they can just follow you

FB is about you and your mates keeping in touch... sharing photos etc etc

Twitter is about celebs making announcements... IMHO worth it just to follow Steven Fry and Phil Helmuth... the former is v funny and v clever and it is very enjoyable to follow... the latter... well it is so funny in a very bad way... always good to know there is some one much more mental than me...

they are completely different things... I dont post on Twitter just follow them two mainly... but use FB a LOT.... I was born in England... grew up in SA... have lived in 4 countries... travel a lot... it is great for me to keep in touch with folk...

I love both.... but FB more..... I remember a discussion at Uni when the interwebs was just kicking off... some fella had the idea of something a lot like FB... I didnt really understand what he meant but the other people there told him he was an idiot... so there you go

Agree that Twitter seems to be a celeb based stalkfest - indeed a friend of mine who is a journalist claims that 90% of their job now each day is just checking up on what people are tweeting (probably an exaggeration - he was never good at maths).

The wife and kids are all on Facebook but being the antisocial animal that I am I prefer to avoid it other than ensuring my wife has the highest score on bejwelled blitz each week 8)

Twitter is for 99.9% of its posts is Celebrity PR and RTs of same.

And .1% of finding experts through Kevin Bacon type links.

The reason that your reporter talks about checking tweets is that most of the PR is amateur nite by the celeb themselves and they reveal what a PR pro wouldn't, which is news.

I have found twitter to be more useful than the others. I have an interest in cooking and food production. I follow a few food bloggers, writers and chefs. I found these people by participating in a year long food project where people made charcuterie at home. Using the hashtag #charcutepalooza we could send questions, links to articles or to our own blog posts and those would get Re-Tweeted to someone that could answer the question or who might be intersted in the article. It has a multiplying factor by virtue of followers re-tweeting that can spread info very quickly. Yes it is used by celebs to hawk their wares, but I think you will miss it's greatest benefit if you think of it as only that.

A very good reason for everyone else not to use any of it
