"I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
The basic rules of mafia can be found here. Here are some specific rules for this game or rules that people often query. Note I have simplified a few rules for this game. If any conflict rules you have seen in other games or places, the ones listed below are correct.
Lynching - Whoever has the most votes at the end of the daytime period will be lynched, regardless of whether or not the town reach a majority. If it is a tie, then the victim will be determined at random. - All votes must be clearly stated in bold. Votes not in bold will not be counted, nor will votes where it is not completely clear who you are voting for. - I vote to lynch nobody is a valid vote. If more people vote to lynch nobody than any particular person, then nobody will indeed be lynched. If it is a tie with ‘nobody’ being one of the participants, then an RNG will be used as usual and if ‘nobody’ wins then nobody will be lynched. - You are allowed to change your vote at any time up until the end of the day period. Any vote you make will replace any other votes you have made previously in that day. For example if you vote to lynch player A and then later vote to lynch player B then your vote for player A is cancelled. - If you want to cancel your vote without voting to lynch somebody else or nobody, then say something like I rescind my vote or I cancel my vote. - I don’t have the ability to lock threads. Any votes that are placed after the designated end time will not be counted. Mafia Kills - The mafia may choose to kill one player during the night phase. That player dies and their identity is revealed, unless they are protected by the doctor. - The mafia may, if they wish, choose not to kill anybody during the night phase. - If nobody dies during the night phase, the villagers will not be told why. They are left to guess whether there was a successful doctor protection or if the mafia chose not to kill. Chatting - Only the mafia and Godfather players may chat outside the game thread. No other players, including the Traitor, is allowed to do so. You may not send PMs or emails to other players, nor may you chat about the game in IRC or in real life (if you happen to know another participant IRL). Also, dead players should not PM still living players and vice-versa. Any player can, however, PM the moderator at any time and for any reason. - All chat in the game thread is considered to be ‘in character’. In other words, don’t take anything said in the game personally, the player is merely acting out their role as an innocent villager/doctor/mafia member etc. Mod Kills A player may be mod-killed for any of the following reasons: - Not voting for two days in a row (a vote to lynch nobody does count as a vote. A rescinded vote does not). - Editing a post in the game thread. - Deliberately chatting outside daylight hours. I can’t lock the thread so I will be harsh on people who deliberately break this rule. Obviously if it appears to be unintentional (such as a post made 30 seconds after lights out) I will let you off. - Chatting about the game outside of the game thread (if you are not mafia). - Posting in the game thread any PMs you receive from the moderator. - Proposing or accepting any side bets (even with a player already dead) - Doing anything obviously against the spirit of the game or ITH community. Most things are fair game in mafia, I think everybody in this game knows where to draw the line. Configuration To make the game more challenging, you will not be told what specials are in the game at the start. However, I will tell you that it will be one of the following, determined randomly: 1. 2 mafia, 1 godfather, 1 doctor, 1 detective, 1 miller, 8 innocents 2. 3 mafia, 2 doctors, 1 vigilante, 8 innocents 3. 3 mafia, 1 detective, 2 masons, 8 innocents 4. 3 mafia, 1 doctor, 2 masons, 8 innocents 5. 3 mafia, 1 traitor, 1 detective, 1 doctor, 8 innocents 6. 2 mafia, 1 godfather, 1 traitor, 2 detectives, 8 innocents 7. 3 mafia, 1 traitor, 1 detective, 1 doctor, 1 vigilante, 7 innocents All detectives will have a 20% chance of being insane. An insane detective will get the opposite results of what a regular detective would get from an investigation (note that in the case of the Godfather, Miller and Traitor, this will actually mean they get a more helpful result). The exception is that, in configuration 6, each detective instead has a 50% chance of being insane. All doctors have a 25% chance of being able to self-protect. The doctor will be told in their original PM whether or not they can self-protect. This means that any of the following roles may or may not be in the game Vanilla innocent Vanilla mafia Godfather Doctor (self protecting) Doctor (not self protecting) Detective (regular) Detective (insane) Vigilante Traitor Miller Mason If you need help on what any of these roles do, feel free to PM me (or just ask in the game thread, somebody will know). Detective investigations Here are the results that the detective will receive when investigating various players. The insane detective will receive the reverse. Innocent – Innocent Mafia – Mafia Godfather – Innocent Doctor – Innocent Detective – Innocent Vigilante – Innocent Traitor – Innocent Miller – Mafia Mason – Innocent Results on Death You will be told the true status of every player when they die, including whether the detective was insane and whether the doctor could self-protect. "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
The town of ITHica had a long and bloody history. Thirteen times, a group of villagers had settled in the town, surrounded as it was by picturesque scenery and fertile soil. But thirteen times the town had been infiltrated by the Mafia and, in two cases, Werewolves as well. Finally, after no end of bloodshed, the people decided that enough was enough. Nobody ever returned to ITHica and its living nightmares, nobody wanted to live in that place anymore, and who could blame them? The town and its buildings were left to rot and decay under the hot sun…..
----------------- But that was ten years ago. The troubles of ITHica had been largely forgotten, except by those in the surrounding villages who still gave the village a wide berth. It was while staying in one of these villages, a larger community nearby called Equalsfour, that a national TV producer heard the story of ITHica and its troubled history. He laughed off the story as merely a local myth, designed to scare children and attract tourists. However, he thought that a ghost town would be a fantastic setting for the new reality TV show that he had planned. He could just picture the commercial now. He pulled out his notepad and started writing. ”11 people, alone in a town with a gruesome past. They must work together to uncover the mysteries of ITHica. Every week the village can vote off the person who they feel is least helpful. Also, to help break up the monotony, they will compete against each other in a series of stupid competitions designed to expose how dumb they really are and make the viewers at home feel smart." He thought for a while and then scribbled out the last sentence. Probably not a good thing to reveal all the industry secrets, he decided. He was so excited about this idea that he shared it with some of the locals in the bar. Most shook their heads and walked away. The local Sheriff, a man known as Skansly laughed and said that he could do what he wanted in ITHica, providing he didn’t bring any trouble to Equalsfour. The producer rushed home, full of excitement about his new project. 11 people, alone in a deserted village…. ----------------- But of course, that was one of the big cons of reality TV. The contestants were never alone as such. There always had to be an entourage of people there to explain the rules, look after the recording equipment, hold the camera etc. In this case, due to budget constraints, the staff was reduced to a three-man camera crew and me, who would deal with the general running of the show. It wouldn’t go out live of course, but I needed to ensure that the camera crew got all the right shots and that none of the contestants actually did any serious bodily harm on each other. It was a depressing assignment, but the money was good, and I was promised that if I did a good job in ITHica then I could cover the naked female mud wrestling for Channel 27 next season. Those would be happy times. I arrived a day early to get my bearings in the village. Public transport had long since abandoned the place and I was forced to hitch a lift with a local farmer. He dropped me off a mile outside of ITHica and sped away in his 4x4 looking visibly petrified. As I walked into the village, an eerie silence was penetrated only by creaking timber and door hinges, long starved of life-giving WD40. As I checked out the old buildings, I would occasionally disturb some of the local rodent population, who had become unaccustomed to visitors. Walking through the outskirts of the village, I found a building called ‘The Riviera’. It was clearly a doctor’s surgery, but the resident practitioner obviously couldn’t afford a sign, because on the door, written in red paint, were the words ‘I AM THE DOCTOR!!!’ At least I assume it was red paint, the words were long faded by the wind and heat. Closer to the town square was a large house. The sign was faded and the only letters that could be made out were F, P and S. The door was off its hinges and I walked in. From the scene in the living room, it looked as if the owner had been in the middle of painting his walls red, but then had left in rather a hurry. On a desk was a list of names with comments furiously scribbled next to them. Stuff like ‘voted FS day 1, then late switch, cosy with KT’. I assumed this was some kind of code. By the time I reached the centre of town, the light was fading and the shops and houses had started to cast their long eerie shadows across the town square. I took refuge in the local pie shop, which looked one of the more robust buildings. Upstairs I found a bed, a couple of discarded beer cans and, for some reason, a pistol. Even though I knew the town to be empty, the pistol was comforting somehow. Protection against the strangeness of this abandoned village. Nevertheless, sleep was difficult. Every owl hooting, cricket chirping and hinge creaking were magnified in contrast to the deafening silence elsewhere. I managed maybe four hours of broken sleep, before the morning sun pierced the grimy windows of my adopted bedroom. The day was a busy one. The eleven contestants were due to arrive in the evening and I had until then to make sure everything was ready for their arrival. Eleven of the more intact houses near the centre of town were cleaned out as best they could be so that the contestants could call them home. I was so busy I didn’t notice things that maybe I should have and didn’t pay that much attention to those I did see. More bullet holes than you would expect to find in village. Several discarded implements such as baseball bats, pitchforks and hunting knives. A lot of walls that seemed to be in the process of being painted red. I had barely finished working when a bus appeared on the horizon. As it got closer, I saw the familiar logo of the TV station on the side. As it got closer still, I saw it contained a number of people, young and old. Some asleep after the long trip, but some excited, looking forward to their five minutes of fame. As the bus pulled up, there were ten minutes of pandemonium. Contestants jumping out of the bus, some rushing to explore the town, some posing for pictures, while others asked questions at the tops of their voices. Camera crew setting up equipment and moaning loudly about a whole range of things, such as the light and the state of the portable electricity generators and the shortage of biscuits. TV station execs running around, trying to look as if they were working, while some media members, who had bribed their way onto the bus, were snapping pictures, filming the surroundings and doing something that they probably called reporting. I spent my time trying to keep everybody in one place, getting last minute instructions from my superiors and explaining the rules of the game to the contestants. Once again, night began to fall and everybody, through some kind of unspoken word, became more subdued. Executives gave up pretending to work and huddled around a clipboard by the bus. Contestants chatted in hushed tones in small groups in the town square. Journalists began looking at their watches and mumbling. Eventually the assembled entourage boarded the coach and drove back into the wilderness, leaving just the eleven contestants, the three cameramen and me alone in the dark town square. I began the formalities by asking the contestants to form an orderly queue, while I took all their names and details. However, it soon became clear that something was amiss. I took the names of the ninth, tenth and eleventh contestants only to find three more still in the queue. I checked back over my list and recounted. There were fourteen contestants present. I took the names of the last three and made a phone call to the station. No answer, I assume the office had long since been vacated. All fourteen people claimed to be contestants on the show and had each given me a name and details (except for one, who preferred to be called ‘Mystery’). I sat there puzzled, looking at the list of 14 names in front of me. bb88 BernardDogs bigredchef cybrarian fatshaft janeg jrmdes Llanlad MXRider nsidestrate Nutjob pilchard wade Mystery Obviously there had been a change of plan and at the last minute they had decided to add three more contestants. I cursed the TV station for springing this on me at the last minute, especially as that meant it would be three more weeks I would be stuck out here in the middle of nowhere. One contestant to be eliminated per week, I recalled. I was grumpy and it had been a long day. I told the contestants to turn in for the night and that filming would start the following day. Eleven were assigned the abandoned houses I had prepared, while the remaining three were given sleeping bags and told to do the best they could. I made my way back to the pie shop and turned in for the night. Tomorrow would be another long day. As would the ninety after that…… Last edited by Piemaster on Mar 04 2007, edited 2 times in total.
"I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
Within the next couple of hours, you will receive one of the following PMs from me.
When everybody has their role I will declare the beginning of Night 1. After that there should be no more chatter in the thread until I declare it to be morning. Last edited by Piemaster on Mar 04 2007, edited 1 time in total.
"I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
Feel free to chat in this thread for the time being. It is not officially night time. Also feel free to ask any questions.
"I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
Is a detective's sanity assigned on each turn? Or is it assigned once and then it holds ...
That is to ask ... can a detective waver back and forth between sane and insane? "I hope you had that one neutered. It should NOT reproduce." - Bullajami
No, a detective with either be Sane or Insane. This status will not change for the duration of the game and will be revealed on death. "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
You also left off "miller" from the list of possible PMs. Option #1 has a miller. Just to avoid confusion later (I'll still be confused) ... you may want to put the potential PM out there.
"I hope you had that one neutered. It should NOT reproduce." - Bullajami
The Miller will receive exactly the same PM as a regular innocent. Likewise the Godfather will receive the same PM as a regular mafia. Neither are aware of their status. "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
well that makes sense, then.
forgive me, I've only played this once. "I hope you had that one neutered. It should NOT reproduce." - Bullajami
No worries, best to get the discrepancies cleared up now before we start. At least there are no Werewolves this game to further complicate things "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
All PMs have been sent and the game has officially started.
It is night time, so from now on nobody may post in this thread until morning. All of the following roles (where present) I need PMs from. Mafia members I need to know who you want to kill tonight. Detectives I need to know who you want to investigate tonight. Doctors I need to know who you want to protect tonight. Vigilante I need to hear from you only if you intend to use your special ability tonight. "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
It was a long night.... for everybody I think
As the sun stretched across the dusty streets of ITHica, the town took on a new identity - one of a long-forgotten life. A couple of discarded soda cans littered the town square, footprints were scattered across the dusty street, in the distance the sound on an electric razor could be heard. After 10 years, ITHica was officially inhabited again. On by one the contestants emerged from their slumber. I was keen to commence filming as quickly as possible. Today the contestants would be tasked with rebuilding some of the structual damage on the buildings. One contestant however did not join the rest in the town square. Nsidestrate seemed to be popular amongst his fellow contestants and had emerged as a kind of leader. He had taken one for the team and had volenteered to spend the night under the stars in a sleeping bag. So where was he? The answer was unfortunately a gruesome one. A fountain in the centre of town had long-since ceased to flow and all that was left was a pool of green stangnant water. One eagle-eyed contestant noticed a hand sicking out of the water. The hand was found to be attached to the cold body of nsidestrate with hit throat expertly cut. There were screams, as the body was pulled form the water. There was a killer among us..... Further investigation of the pool revealed yet more gruesome discoveries. The bodies of the three cameramen were found with single bullets to the temple. Carved in the chest of one of them with a knife, were the words 'get out of our town'. Suddenly my mind returned to the list of 14 'contestants'. The chilling truth hit me with a sudden certainty. I never bothered to count the contestants as they came off the bus. There were never 14 contestants at all, just 11 as advertised. The town was not deserted at all, the old stories were true there was still a mafia cell in operation here. When the contestants had arrived, the mafia had slipped in the crowd amongst the confusion. What we had was 11 contestants (well, 10 now) and 3 cold-blooded killers! Obviously my first thought was to leave town, but how? The bus was not due until a week later to pick up the first 'eviction'. Unfortunately I had lent my cell phone to one of the camera crew. A quick search of his pocket found it to be completely out of commission. Destroyed by the water in the pool. The camera equipment was found in a mangled heap under a bush. The mafia clearly didn't want any 'evidence' of what had happened here. We needed to find the killers and fast... "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
It is morning, I apologise for the excessively long night.
The deadline for tonights voting will be tomorrow (Wednesday) at Midday EST (5PM GMT). This is a long day to give everyone a chance to participate. Hopefully we will eventually settle on a more convenient time to end each day. "I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences."
Well the longest first night ever?
What can we learn from this? Well before everyone goes off on one, nothing. It was a long night with possibly a lot of special characters and very few vanilla innocents. What can we learn from Nside's demise? Nothing, who would you have bumped off as mafia? Well there it is, a massively insiteful opening post to mafia 14.
