Does Party Poker software have spyware??

Postby luckydog » Jan 28 2006

I just recently downloaded Party and installed it.
Today Zone Alarm popped up identifying some type of software running in the background of Party when I was not running the Party software.
I let Zone Alarm quarantine the culprit and the party icon disappeared from my desktop.
Could this be some type of tracking software or is it that ZA is misreading something in the Party software.

Could be various things, from auto-update software talking to your software - looks like a trojan. Or, it could be their anti cheating stuff - I don;t know how often they do it, but the software is capable of checking what processes you have running (looking for bots) and can apparently take screen shots as well. Might this trigger your software?

Is this legal? I don't like the idea of them taking screen shots or checking my processes.

I'm pretty sure the law isn't going to help you.

This sort of thing used to happen a lot in the MMOG (massively-multiplayer online game) arena... Companies got raked over the coals for scanning users' processes to see if cheat programs were installed.

It ended up being on very shakey legal ground, and extremely unethical (huge invasion of privacy issues), but I don't think most poker sites are going to care, and US laws probably couldn't touch them anyway.

Poker sites can do whatever they want - they operate outside the law anyway.

BTW - It is spyware.

Do these spying programs work when the client is not running?

Check the agreements you sign-up for when signing up with a poker-site, they often say that the site is allowed to do this.

In my case the client was not running when Zone Alarm detected the problem.

Interesting. I have Zone Alarm too, but it hasn't picked anything up, other than asking me if I wanted to allow the client to connect when I open it.

I have a program called SnoopFree Privacy Shield. It lets you know if another program is trying to read your screen or hook your keyboard. It was recommended on some computer forum.

Anyways, according to this program, Party Poker uses a keylogger or something to record what you're typing. Whenever I open PP, I get a warning that it's trying to hook my keyboard. If I don't allow it, I can still play on Party, but I can't chat.

I don't think Party does anything malicious with it. I think it's just a poorly designed chat feature. Before I got SnoopFree, I would sometimes check my email while playing, and I may have even logged into my Neteller account while playing. Party hasn't hacked into my email or Neteller accounts, even though they probably got my passwords with the keylogger. But I still hate the fact that they do it at all, and I rarely play there for a variety of reasons.

This is serious.

I had a clue that they were monitoring processes - but not keylogging.

I was hoping to take advantage of all the bonuses that Party offers and perhaps the good fishing others speak of but I don't think I will bother now.
I think uninstall will be the best answer for me at this time.
Thanks all.
