Black Monday for St Paddy's?Surfing around a bit this morning (not watching TV news) it's looking like a very bad day for the stock market.
The stock market is not an area of expertise for me, but I'm anxious to get to work today and chat with my immediate supervisor, as his wife works at Smith Barney. Pretty sure he'll have somthing to say about all this. Gas prices over $3, pushing to $4 in some places, dollar hardly worth the paper it's printed on, and a simple trip to the grocery store is becoming almost painful. Now this. Ugh.
You don't realise that the US has very cheap petrol compared to a lot of other places.
An average price in Sydney today would be about $1.38/litre or $5.20 a gallon. At the current exchange rate that's around US$4.85 per gallon.
I'll say. At average current UK prices and exchange rates, a US gallon of petrol costs roughly $8.25. "I shall never retire!" - Llanlad
We're paying $1.07/litre so about $4.00/US Gallon at today's exchange rate. Cheaper than alot of places but annoying when you consider the amount of gas Canada produces.
Electricity is running at $0.10/KWH "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." -- Voltaire
We pay about 15.8% in Federal taxes and 14.7% for Provincial taxes so 30.5% of the price is taxes; that's for Toronto.
Prices vary within the province (believe Northern Ontario prices are higher) and across the provinces; prices are probably lower in Alberta, more in the Maritimes. "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." -- Voltaire
Varies quite a bit with supplier and rate, but the equivalent of 10 cents (US) at night and 35 cents during the day are ballpark figures.
In the UK, roughly two-thirds is tax of one form or another. "I shall never retire!" - Llanlad
It's not just the gas taxes and sales taxes, either. It's the part that we don't see...corporate income taxes. The oil driller, the refiner, the tanker, the pipeline, the wholesaler, and the retailer...all of those embedded taxes are being paid by someone...guess who. “We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work...We have never made good on our promises…we have just as much unemployment as when we started…And an enormous debt to boot!” - Henry Morgenthau, SecTreas for FDR, 1939
That's true toom, and I suppose that each country has a few different corporate taxes on the production of gas that would be hard to weed out. I was just looking for the ballpark cost of gas. You often hear how we (US) have cheap gas, but when you take out the obvious taxes the price is fairly even around the globe.

In Brisbane Australia, I pay 13.88 cents or around 13 cents per kWh for electricity.
Sounds like that's well over the US as well. Our use is restricted but we also pay $1.19 or around US$1.105 per kL (264 gallons) for every drop of water we use. Our target quota for water use at the moment is 140 litres (approx 37 gallons) of water per person per day.
There is also the record-breaking profits being earned by companies in the oil business: Exxon $86 billion Total $74 billion BP $60 billion Chevron $58 billion Shell $55 billion Conoco $39 billion
But they have to turn a buck nside for providing us with the old black pollutant.
As an aside, I saw a table the other day listing the carbon tonnes per person produced by countries. Although China is the biggest polluter as a nation, per person the US and Canada are way above everyone else in terms of global warming. And I thought Canadians were more responsible than you "live for today" yanks
