Acronyms, All Things Poker

Postby RiverCascade » Feb 25 2006

As with the glossary, this list has been revised, cutting out the non-acronym posts, and alphabetized. Please continue to post acronym questions, following this initial post, as well as corrections. Thank you for your help and contributions. I'll be fine-tuning (adding glossary links and living color) in the weeks to come.

3bet, See Glossary.

BB, Big Bet, the larger of the two bets in limit hold'em, e.g., in $2/4 limit the big bet is $4; or Big Blind, one of the 2 forced bets in hold'em, it's the size of the small bet, e.g., if the limit is $2/4, the big blind is $2.

CO, Cut-off position, the position right before, or immediately to the right, of the dealer (button).

EP, Early position-- in full ring, 10-handed, it's the first 3 positions after the 2 blinds.

EV, Expected Value (see glossary for definition).

ITH, Internet Texas Hold'em, this forum, or Matthew's book.

ITM, In the Money. In tournament play, finishing in a top position that gets paid. If the top 9 positions are paid and you are one of them, it's said you finished ITM.

IWC, Idiot With Chips, referring to a poor player, not necessiarly a fish, who, by definition, is loose passive.

LAG, Loose Aggressive Guy.

LP, Late Position-- in full ring, 10-handed, it's the last 2 positions, i.e., the cut-off and the button.

MP, Middle Position-- in full ring, 10-handed, it's the 3 positions after the early position. Seats 1 and 2 are the blinds. Seats 3, 4, and 5 are early position. Seats 6, 7 and 8 are middle position.

MTT, Mutli-table tournaments.

OESD, Open-ended Straight Draw, e.g., you hold KJ. Flop is QT4.

OOP, Out of Position, i.e., not closing the action in a betting round.

OTB, Off the button. Used in referring to table position. 2 OTB would be seat 8 in full ring.

OTT, Over the Top. When a player raises and another player re-raises, the second player is said to be coming over the top. This term is usually used in tournament play.

PP, Pocket pair. Holding a pair in your hand.
RGP, an acronym standing for rec.gambling.poker -- the original poker discussion forum.
SB, Small Bet, the smaller of the two bets in limit hold'em, e.g., in $2/4 limit the small bet is $2; or Small Blind, one of the 2 forced bets in hold'em, it's one-half the size of the small bet, e.g., if the limit is $2/4, the small blind is $1.

S/H, Short-handed game-- usually 6 players, also known as 6-max. True, in the pure sense of the word, short-handed play is 4 players.

SNG, Sit 'n Go. A one table tournament, though now they have 2 and 3 table tournaments referred to as sng's. You only have to beat 10, 20, or 30 players (depending on the number of tables), as opposed to a field of 200 or more.

TPGK, Top Pair Good Kick, e.g., you hold KQ and the flop is K98. See TPTK for contrast.

TPTK, Top Pair Top Kick, e.g., you hold AK and the flop is K98.

UTG, Under the Gun, the first person to act after the blinds, usually Seat 3, also known as early position.

Another victim of FPS, Fancy Play Syndrome-- need the correct opp to make moves/try to outplay them-- especially at lower levels where they almost all play at the zeroth or 1st level of thinking you usually do end up spewing chips-- even against the correct opp you have to pick your spots--not try to do it too often. -- Bugsbunny

What does 'M' mean? I see it all the time associated with tournaments. Like in a recent post when a member stated that he still had an M of 9.

Ahh... good one, Pisc. Thanks for reminding me. It has to do with how many chips you have in relation to the blinds/antes in a tournament. It comes from Harrington on Hold'em. Someone explained it to me once. I thought I put it in the glossary but may have forgotten. I'll get the exact explanation and add it here. Thanks, again.

Harringon M (in fact Magriel's M) also called the Strong Force:

The ratio of your stack to the current total of the blinds and antes.

So if you have 1000 chips SB=25, BB=50, Antes=25
M = 1000 / 100 = 10

The M tells you how many orbits you can survive before being blinded off, assuming you play no pots.

Depending on that ratio, you play hands differently and have different starting hand requirement. The more your M is close to 0, the more you open up and push.

Harrington Q also called the Weak Force

The ratio of your stack to the average number of chips left for each player.

If you have 1000 chips and and the average player left in the tournament has 500 chips you have:

Q = 1000 / 500 = 2

The Q gives you a measure of your position in the tournament relative to the other players. A high Q means you can play more conservatively and a low Q means you have to open up.

If M and Q conflict, use M.

I've seen this a few times now. This is from a post by Taz115, "playing prior to this but he is a good player iirc." What does the iirc refer to?

Thanks,
Cro

What does CB mean please? I would post a link to the thread where I read this but I can't..

The poster raised preflop then said he made a CB when first to act on the flop.

Thanks
