TPTK vs min raise on scary board

Postby Newbatron » Jul 11 2010

This is from a $4.4 180 man MTT where generally the play is very poor. The villain was your stereotype fish who limp/called too much and had been playing 40/4. I open from UTG+1 with AKs and flop top pair. I decide to c bet on the small side to keep the pot small against this fish OOP and to keep in all of his weaker hands (Kx). Looking back this is prob a mistake with so many draws and another player in the pot. Ok so we get min raised and we lose to 99, KQ and JT all within villians range. We beat flush draws and weak pairs like KJ/QJ that players at micro stakes like to min raise "to see where they stand". We also beat total air that perceived our c bet as weak. What is your course of action here? Shuving means he snaps with everything that beats us but most likely folds everything we beat. Anyone like smoothing his reraise and shuving the turn to keep in all his trash as he'd be getting 3:1 and cant fold any of his range.

Posted this as I really struggle to maximise value with my TPTK hands and minimise losses when im behind. I seem to suffer from the reverse implied odds these hands give by getting it in on the flop alot.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, 4.4 Tournament, 25/50 Blinds (8 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Hero (UTG) (t1545)
UTG+1 (t1830)
MP1 (t708 )
MP2 (t1377)
CO (t4255)
Button (t4455)
SB (t5420)
BB (t1150)

Hero's M: 20.60

Preflop: Hero is UTG with :as, :ks
Hero bets t165, UTG+1 calls t165, 3 folds, Button calls t165, 2 folds

Flop: (t570) :9d, :qs, :kd (3 players)
Hero bets t250, UTG+1 raises to t500, 1 fold, Hero ?

I'm going broke here.

Shuving means he snaps with everything that beats us but most likely folds everything we beat.

Not even close at this level.

Anyone like smoothing his reraise and shuving the turn to keep in all his trash as he'd be getting 3:1 and cant fold any of his range.

Looks like overthink / FPS to me.

This smells like a st8 or set........I think I fold here and live to play.......calling seems like chip spew and as you said a shove only gets called by hands that beat you.

Re the reverse implied odds bit - because of your stack sizes this isnt really the problem - its just they are calling and getting lucky. Normally to call your raise and set mine I'd want at least 15 but preferably at least 20x the raise to be behind in your stack. (I'd also not want to be UTG+1 but thats another matter).

At this level a lot of players can't even spell straight so I'd shove and not be overly surprised to be called by KJ or 66
To infirmity and beyond

What Hawk said? At a higher level maybe you can get away from this but not here. I do not think a draw is that likely. Why would he raise with a draw? Wouldn’t he want to see more cards as cheap as possible? I would flat call the flop for 250 more and try to get to the end as cheap as possible let him bet your hand. That way you can pick off a bluff with a worst hand.

The only problem with flatting his min raise is that there are so many scare cards out there that he can easily represent. I think we end up folding a lot on future streets if we just call the flop raise so I think I prefer a shove because from what I understand at this level there's plenty worse hands that will call it off. I'd also bet more as a Cbet on a board this wet and get villain to just shove commit with a largish range. It can't be too bad stacking off with TPTK here for 30BB.
