Interesting (but probably off topic) comment I read recently about weak fields in MTTs.

In thoery we should cash 10% if the whole game were random. Although our skill increases this its not as big in a weak field because they tend to play cards and call down hands they should have folded. Where the skilled players big edge comes in cashing deep/winning - weaker players shut up shop around the bubble and towards the final table which the better players take advantage of. Also having short stack skills and final table experience help.

The logic seems to be that in cash games the best way to win against the fish is to be patient and play on their calling tendencies. In tournaments you cant always sit and wait for cards.

You can be at weak tables that are great because players will fold to heat. At these types of tables you don't need cards. You can be at weak tables that are great because players are loose and stubborn and will chase you with weak made hands. Now these tables are not as great as the first group because you actually have to have a hand. But you will get paid.

I've been at some very very juicy weak tables. But the scary ones are those where the players are so bad they don't even know what they should do, but they are nevertheless aggressive. Or sometimes they are passive. These players are unreadable and it is pretty scary.

I think you're probably more likely to find the first type of weak table in live and the second online - so yes I'm way off topic!

Only because another theory is that players are less likely to make hero calls live because of the embarassment of being wrong!

Its an awkward spot but I think you should definitely be shoving 9s against my opening range... a 3b would look way too strong(not 100% sure on effective stack sizes here)... but the obvious downside to that is you were playing really tight so my calling range vs you isn't going to be very wide. Even with the dynamic I created I won't be able to get it in all that wide because no one really seemed interested in playing back at me pre flop.

Thanks for the reply Justin and welcome to the forum. When you get older like me suddenly a whole bunch of players look like "kids". No disrespect intended.

Ha, it's okay... I am used to being called "the kid" and whatnot in the live poker world. I am sure that is how I will be viewed in this game for atleast a few more years. It is a good thing for getting action but my age and appearance alone make people play back at me more than others... and obviously my style play doesn't contradict that theory in the slightest. =]

All I can say is that when I play live I want old guys and females at my table. Don't give me the kids; I know how good they are!

Wow, I don't even know if books can read this well: thorough, interesting trip report full of good poker that ends with the unknown villain revealing himself to give his side of the story?!? Superb stuff--thx chris for the engaging read!
