Call/fold AQ preflop?

Postby taz115 » Jan 28 2010

Call or fold folks? I probably could have raised a bit less, 550 is probably my usual bet preflop here. Multi-tabling so no reads.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, 6.5 Tournament, 100/200 Blinds (7 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

SB (t1785)
BB (t2555)
Hero (UTG) (t2700)
MP1 (t2905)
MP2 (t1775)
CO (t2705)
Button (t665)

Hero's M: 9.00

Preflop: Hero is UTG with :qh, :as
Hero bets t600, MP1 raises to t2905 (All-In), 3 folds, SB calls t1685 (All-In), HERO???

Total pot: t4370

If you fold you have 2200 - if you call and only beat MP1 you have just under 2000 so I guess it comes down to whether or not you think you can beat him.

Given that everyones M isnt exactly deep stacked I dont think a call is that unreasonable. Admittedly I'm basing that on some fairly loose players at Party but I still think MP1s range is very wide

Without reads, this seems like a fold to me. AQoff doesn't usually handle a 3-bet push and a call behind very well.

If you had some kind of read on the short stack then I could potentially see the call, but I'd rather maintain the 11BB's and 3-bet shove someone else later.

I think this comes down to whether you think you are ahead of MP1 as leofric points out. The only truly negative outcome is if you call and lose to MP1. If you beat MP1 and lose to SB you've basically gotten the same result as folding. That additional blind you lose isn't going to change your ongoing strategy at all which is to get your 10BB in the middle as soon as you can with a decent hand or good enough spot.

I count up 5,300 in the pot. So 5,300/2,100 is 2.5 to 1 pot odds.

Assign a range of 66+, AJs+, AQ, KQs to MP1 - you are 3 to 2 against just him - but the pot for just the two of you is only 2,000.

Now assign TT+, AQs, A-K to SB - you are 3.7 to 1 against both - so not good.

I fold and wait for a better spot.

I figured it was reasobly close, it was also a turbo and I typically get my chips in when it's close but I did fold here. MP1 had AK and the other player had AQ.
