ATs on button, down to two tables

Postby Outlier » Jul 14 2010

It's down to two tables (7 handed) in a MTT with around 1400 runners. This hand comes up--how would you play it?

Villain had been at my table for a while (120 hands). I remember thinking at the time of the hand that he was a bit weak, but in looking through the hand histories, I can't find the hands I thought I remembered his playing badly. He did open limp KJs UTG+2 8-handed with less than 15 BB once. His stats at the time of this hand were VP12% PR6% AF 3.0.

Neither of the blinds were showing any aggro tendencies.

12/6 stats for a tournament at this stage is tight passive. Given that he's opening 3x from UTG I would put him on a strong range that beats your hand. You should look to resteal from a looser player and fold here. The problem with flatting is that you have to go with any A high flop and you may well be dominated.

23 BB is plenty at this stage. I fold this even against a somewhat looser raiser. As it is, straightforward fold for me.

I thought at the time it was a lot closer, but the consensus is clearly a fold, which is what I should have done. I shoved and ran into AA. Flatting would had the same end result, as the flop was A-T-x.

Thanks for the feedback--

yeah you can't call as you aren't deep enough, you can't do a standard raise as it is far too awkward. A shove it a real spew 23bbs deep, so the only real option is to fold here. Plenty of time and no need to panic, fold and move on.

Against this opponent and from this position, my range for a shove would probably be AQ and TT plus. Nines would be borderline. I'm not sure what I do with 88.

AT is on the borderline for me to 3 bet shove under most circumstances, but against an opponent like this it's an insta muck. You are rarely going to be good here and your best bet is a flip or 40% against a couple of other broadways.

You have the right thought process with 23BB just the wrong execution in this spot. Find a better, more profitable 3 bet shove spot.
