AQ: Strange line by opp

Postby maf66 » Aug 25 2011

Stars $11 MTT. I joined during late reg, and this is only the 2nd hand of the tourney for me, hence no reads on anyone.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, 11 Tournament, 30/60 Blinds (9 handed) - PokerStars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

saw flop

MP3 (t2572)
CO (t4058 )
Button (t3410)
SB (t10821)
BB (t5778 )
UTG (t4578 )
Hero (UTG+1) (t3000)
MP1 (t2685)
MP2 (t4180)

Hero's M: 33.33

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with :ac, :qs
1 fold, Hero bets t150, 5 folds, SB calls t120, 1 fold

Flop: (t360) :9c, :4c, :as (2 players)
SB bets t60, Hero raises to t200, SB calls t140

Turn: (t760) :8s (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets t300, SB raises to t1260, Hero ???

This was just odd. He min bet the flop, the check/raised the turn. My thought on the flop was possibly a flush draw, but the turn confused me. Maybe he hit 2 pair? I honestly have no idea.

Thoughts please.

I think you have to fold here.

now and again I get gambling fever and go for it with a push.... AJ, AT and total bluffs are clearly part of his range... but AK, sets, flopped or turned two pair are clearly too a significant part of his range....

of course if you choose to gambol and lose the lot you must tell yourself it is to do with merging ranges (your own) or wotnot... otherwise you end up hating yourself and drinking too much whiskey

Check raising the turn is a sign of strength the vast majority of the time.

Given that you've represented your hand on every street and he's still raising you have to fold here.

I would bet more on the turn. If he has a weaker hand or flush draw then he'll probably call 500 as readily as 300. I would've raised more on the flop too.

Thanks for the replies. I did end up folding as I thought that, despite the hand being played rather odd, his turn check/raise did seem strong. I'm relieved others thought the same.

@Zenjo. I thought my bet sizing might be a bit small. This an area I often have problems with. But this is a discussion for another time.

This spot stinks, but I always tend to give a higher bluff percentage to any player who has almost 4x the starting chips early on. I figure he's much more likely to bluff which puts flush draws squarely in his range.

I don't know what I do here - probably call down and busto.

I think i check behind on the turn for pot control. I think you gotta fold. I really really doubt villian is bluffing here.

Too spewy to check the turn then call the river? In my experience, that would more often be a bluff, and you have a bluff catcher.

Yeah, my ideal line would raise the flop bigger and check back the turn. Then I'd call all reasonable sized river bets.
