99 in BB...call, fold, raise, push?

Postby ImBetterDude » Dec 18 2011

15 left, just got moved to even out tables. $50 50 man turney in AC. Blinds are 1k/2k, Im in BB with 99. Got about 33k in chips, in 4th or 5th. New table and most players Im readless, but generally feeling like players are pretty weakpassive with a Few laggers exploiting.

Anyway, folds around to button whos in 3rd with bout 40k. He raises to 5500.

Move?

Depends if the Button is one of the weak passive or LAGs!

Given the stack sizes I'd normally say shove or fold but if anyone wants to make a case for a stop and go I'd listen!

I'm also assuming we're a way from the bubble (top 5 paid?) so its more likely to come down to how you feel about the table at the moment. If you're confident of outplaying them and you'll get better spots then maybe you could fold this.

Your stack is less than 20BB but then by the sound of it everyone else is even worse off! I'm inclined to shove because I think he'll probably open quite wide here and maybe even fold out some of the more troubling hands (2 overcards) since he wont want to risk his tournament on a flip at best.

Long time since I've played any tournaments though!

This is an easy reshove. None of the other options are any good. You have the perfect stack size for it, and 99 is ahead of pretty much anyone's button raising range at this stage.

Its a clear shove fold with your stack size, which means you really have to shove.

I was hoping for this feedback because I actually did shove...but lost to JJ on the BTN.

My buddy was at this table longer, and this was like the 2nd hand I played at the table. He said that this guy was very tight and wasn't even capable of making BTN steals with a wide range and always represented at least a semi-decent hand.

From my perspective, there was no way to know this. But even if I did...I still think it's next to impossible to do anything but push. I can't see any justification for smooth calling, as if I'm afraid of big cards falling on the board it means I think he has AQ or the like and a push makes sense. If I'm confident on a small board and will bet into him then I should have just shoved over him preflop.

Essentially, given the stacks, I just don't see how to not shove in this spot.
