Postby MXRider » Jun 24 2010

You are currently sitting 4/11 and are playing 4 handed. The chip leader has just c/r you and you hold TPTK. What's your play?

saw flop | saw showdown

Button (t15420)
SB (t55605)
BB (t20310)
Hero (UTG) (t31055)

Hero's M: 19.41

Preflop: Hero is UTG with QImage, AImage
Hero bets t2000, 1 fold, SB calls t1600, 1 fold

Flop: (t5200) 8Image, QImage, 9Image (2 players)

Give him the pile.

You could be behind, but as chip-leader, he could be doing this with a wide range of hands. You are likely way ahead of his range.

What range of hands can we estimate here?

Weaker queens (QT-KQ) make up a substantial portion of his range, along with PPs that missed and are punting that you did too.

It's no doubt a tough spot without reads. I'd be inclined to think that the average villain playing these are capable of stacking off light so I think you can probably get it in and get called by worse. His flop raise is small which in theory should rule out draws but I'm not sure villain would necessarily be thinking like this, plenty of combo draws he can stack off with.

I don't mind calling the flop raise in position and getting it in on a safe turn card as well to keep all of his bluffs in (which he no doubt could have here).

The money bubble has burst so you haven't got to worry about that therefore I don't like folding just because of some of the bizarre stuff I've seen in these tournaments.

I'm pushing too. You are likely ahead and might get called by a worse Q. Add them together it's a push.

Of hands you beat:

any pair with a straight draw, A8, A9, KQ, underpair that he is just bluff-raising, air ...

Hands you are losing to - JT or 2 pair. Tough to think he has a set as I suspect he would have reraised 88 or better PF.

As I could see many hands that he could have here that I am ahead of I contemplated flatting his raise but there are so many turn cards that is going to give me hell while I'm not sure what is in his calling range if i should shove. Obvioulsy any set, JT, 98, possibly a weaker Q but are pair w/gutters in this too?

I think gutters + pair are possibly in villains stacking off range but obviously difficult to say without a read.

I think there's enough that villain will stack off with to make pushing the best play here but it's probably close. The fact that QJ and QT have a straight draw to go with their pair suggests villain will always stack off with these.

But as I said before I'm fine with calling the flop raise and getting it in on the turn on a safe card.

Weak q most likely

Postby jbhstochors » Jul 05 2010

Easy call or reraise. You are most likely ahead unless he has a set.
So you either call or reraise, with the intentions of taking all his chips.
I would call and let him give you the remainder of his chips on the turn, knowing that your most likely way ahead. 8)

Although ranges do come into it I think this is more dependent on how you read your opponents ability. To me this is a fairly standard check-raise from a big stack who thinks that flop could have missed you and he's pushing you off your c-bet. His cards arent as important as yours - since you have TPTK there's no point in folding - given the board and your lack of redraws I'd prefer to shove since scare cards will either give him a chance to bluff you off or scare him into folding.
To infirmity and beyond
