Trash in the big blind

Postby Willem » Jun 26 2011

Standard loose micro-limit game

PokerStars Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (5 handed) - PokerStars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Preflop: Hero is BB with :3d, :6c
UTG raises, MP calls, 1 fold, SB calls, Hero ???

Call or fold this. I have a strong opinion about this, but I genuinely wonder what everyone else does here.

I click the fold box before UTG makes a decision, but I'm genuinely interested to know why you're genuinely interested. Welcome home.

I had a phase where I thought 7:1 (or certainly 9:1) was good enough to call ATC, but I got over it. I fold.

Well, I'm actually going through that phase now. The only hands I'd fold here are unsuited hands that cannot use two cards to make a strait. You can check-fold the flop like 7 times, and win 1 bet the 8th time and be brake even. I find it hard to believe that there's no profit here.

But you have to be willing to release your hand if you flop just one pair if you feel you're behind. Suppose the flop comes :td :9c :2d and there is some action, folding would probably be wise as you are likely behind. Spiking 2 pair might not give you the best hand, and even if it does, half the deck will likely improve someone to a better hand.

Of course, opponents at $0.05/$0.10 do pay off handsomely when I do hit nicely. With better opponents, this might not be the case. But I double better opponents will cold call here to begin with.

Rest of hand is uneventful, but I will post it later. (I won a huge pot with trips or whatever).

At the micros, a 6 does have the added benefit of attracting late-street caps from Ax holdings that make a wheel, but I'd still want a better partner for it than an offsuit 3.

Ultimately, my conclusion was that I was probably right at the margin of profitable with these kinds of hands, but it adds a ton of variance and I think I was better off folding.

I checked up on some odds, and I will flop 2pair or better under 5%* of the time, and additional 6% for a OESD. When getting 1:7, I need to flop good 12.5% of the time, so I'm a little short. And most of these hands are still vulnerable to redraws (better 2pair, flush, etc).

So I agree it's a fold. Still calling any two suited cards though.

Yeah, I still call with most any two suited unless I think the other players are especially strong. Frankly if I'm at a table where I don't want to call with any suited cards getting that many customers, I probably should be at another table.
