Request for FAQ questions and answers

Postby jeffnc » Sep 29 2005

I'll be adding a FAQ to this Limit Hand Example forum in the near future. I'd appreciate suggestions for inclusions, and any suggested answers or partial answers as well. Of course I won't add anything that isn't actually a Frequently Asked Question, so I'm looking for questions people have noticed over the last couple years to be brought to my attention, without me having to go back through all the posts ever made here :) Basically this thread will be condensed into a single FAQ at some point, and this thread will go away.

Here is a question that isn't asked frequently enough:

Q: I don't have as much experience (or play at the same levels) as some of the posters here. Should I feel intimidated or should I take a shot at responding to Hand Examples?

A: All of us felt the same way at some time. All of us (with the possible exception of Pilchard) have made some truly foolish responses to examples. All of us have probably learned more when we posted a wrong idea and had it corrected than we do from anything else.

No one is going to tell you that your response is stupid or make fun of it. If they do, one of the moderators will smack them. They might disagree with you and tell you that you are wrong. It doesn't hurt. It will make you a better poker player.

Please don't be afraid to post here. Post hand examples and post your ideas on how to play a hand, posting = learning.

Good one. It counts because people are frequently thinking it even though they aren't frequently asking it.

Great post nside. I still consider myself a beginner but with nothing but constructive help and welcoming comments from you and jeffnc in particular, I have never been made to feel that 2/4c posts are any less respected than 10/20$ ones. I have now started posting some examples. The feedback from some of them has been eye-opening  and not the sort of stuff you'd be able to get from anyone except a poker player with insight, experience and knowledge.

I try and reply to others' posts IF I feel I can add something. Unfortunately, it usually takes me a few days or more to work my through the examples.

I hope that anyone who is a 'beginner' takes the advice of the above posts and gives it a go. It can only benefit everyone's game.

Note to self: also under the heading of "should be asked" - should I post the results of the hand when asking for feedback?

Oh yes, this needs to be addressed.

I think general guidance on how to post hand examples would be very useful, e.g.

If you can, convert the hand to some readable form (and if no converter is available for your history, a bit of hand-crafted effort always goes down well)

Whether to include the results or not (basically boils down to how much you want to infuriate Icall ;))

Is the limit important?

Additional information - do you have any notes or reads on any of the players? (it helps if these notes are accurate, but for the purposes of analysing your play in a particular situation, that's a different matter. If you think someone is a rock, you should play as you would against a rock. If your read turns out to be wrong, then it was your read that was bad, and not the play itself), how is the table playing? (loose, tight, agg, pass), what is your own table image (if relevant)?

How much should I include of my own thinking during the hand? Does that prejudice the answers of others?

Try not to give away the ending by implying it in the post

Try to give a meaningful title (ie something other than "Limit hand example") without trying to be too clever or abstract.

That reminds me. Try not to give away the result with your title. A title reading "Where should I have folded?" pretty much gives away the results.

note to self - potential question or 2 in here somewhere: Should I mention what limit the hand was played at? (A better question would just be "What information should be posted with the hand?") Will the good players answer questions about micro limits, or only other beginners? Will the advice be different depending on the limit?

I think a general 'what posts belong here' question would be good. Make it clear that this is a forum for limit strategy questions or puzzles, not somewhere to post your bad beats or big wins. Seems to be something that is creeping in lately.

Jeff, did you ever get the FAQ done? Always thought a Hand Example FAQ, based on different situations would be cool.

Jane, just put one together the other day, will convert to HTML when I get back in town next week. But can you explain what you mean by "based on situations"?

Sorry Jeff ...just saw this. I was thinking of FAQ based on situations that come up regularly in the examples ie HU with AK overcards against a LAG or TP. Various ch/r situations, river value bets, raising turn to protect or build pot, etc.

Not saying it would be easy but I bet if we dug through the examples we would find numerous similar situations (hands, boards, # of opponents, etc).
