Best Book and Online Sources for LHE 6-MAx?

Postby Piscivorous » Feb 01 2011

I'm playing full-ring LHE both live and at Stars and Full Tilt. I can also find some sporadic traffic elsewhere like Bodog as high as $1/$2. I'm facing the realization that I really need to learn LHE 6-Max in order to get enough traffic at the lesser sites or commit to NL cash on them. Something that really isn't working too well.

What are the best 6-Max books and are there some really good online sources for crushing the games?

I doubt online 6-max LHE is crushable to any significant degree, anywhere, any more.

After a fairly successful 2009 at FRLHE I felt as you did this time last year and spent 2010 playing 6-max. I actually managed to lose money at the tables over the year, and even with RB made less than half what I did in 2009. Of course, I might be simply no good at it but, while I wouldn't rule that out entirely, it does seem to me that the present legally restricted and increasingly savvy player pool is going a long way towards making an omelette out of the golden egg that limit grinding once was. At 6-max, and at the levels we play, I could beat the other players, but that 3BB/100 rake just killed me. Like mconstab, I'm now entirely disillusioned with poker as a profit-making opportunity and have pretty much given it up altogether. Well, I say 'given up'; what I'm actually doing is 15-tabling FRLHE at the micros, but playing 900 hph doesn't have a lot to do with poker - just satisfies my desire for a quick buzz and makes a few $$$ in the process.

So my best online advice is 'don't bother'. :)

That said, I thought Stox was pretty good, though a lot of the concepts require your opps to have >1 brain cell. I also have a 125-page pdf collection of articles on SH play which, though a bit dated, will give you a good general overview. PM me with your email if you'd like it.

I played about 20-30 hours of 6-max Limit early last year. I played from limits ranging from $2-$4 up to $10-$20. At even the $2-$4 limit, I found the players ridiculously good - they would have crushed the 30-60 games from a few years ago. Now, I only played at Stars and it was apparent that most of the players were simply grinding away to try and reach SuperNova - and therefore were very good players. In many ways, the game has been mastered pretty much like SitnGos. I'd be interested to hear what earn rates are typical nowadays - I expect it is pretty low.

If I had the time to dabble in ring games, I would probably play some of the fringe games like PLO Hi-Lo.

But for a 6-Max book, pretty much Stox's book whose title says it all, Winning in Tough Hold'em Games.

I was a member of Stoxpoker for a couple of years and found it useful but some of the more aggressive lines were misunderstood by me and I got a bit of a spanking at 2/4 6max. I'm not sure if it was the style didn't suit me or if the explanations weren't always clear or if I'm a bit dumb. I signed up to DeucesCracked and found the LHE content much better. A lot of the vids had either 2 coaches or coach & student discussing the hands in detail making the concepts much easier for me to understand. Their vids don't have DRM either which means you can still watch those you've downloaded whether you're still a member or not. I left them just under a year ago due to an imminent expanding family but hope to get back at some point.

I'm a little depressed to hear how the games are so hard though. After my 2/4 mauling I went back to .50/1 and was hoping to get back up to 2/4 again when more confident.

I have to say I have more fun playing 7 card stud hi/lo at the moment.

Deusescrack has a good series for learning to play 6-max called the "the prise is right" Their newer vids have kind of turned to trash latley.
Also I am part of a study group the meets on Thursday night thats limit 6max group. We generally watch some one play ask them to mark hand then review the after play is over. Lots of winning players in my group. Hit me up on skype if you want to sit in. skype: thew92

That's a shame. The last series I got before leaving was I Has A Pear. I'm only just starting to watch it. I did rewatch The Price Is Right again recently as I've got it on my iPod and have been watching it on the exercise bike at the gym. I liked the 3 series of Real Life MicroLimit Grinder too.
