4/8 hand at the Horseshoe

Postby ciaran » Jan 30 2011

UTG+1 limps
MP limps
LP limps
I raise AdKh in the SB
BB calls, limpers call
Flop 9c 7h 4c
I bet, only UTG+1 calls
Turn 4d
I check, he checks
River 2s
I check, he bets, I...

Villain is typical 4/8 player, but if it matters he has gold teeth and his girlfriend is sitting behind him looking annoyed :-)

Call, right? Enough of a chance he has a JT, some other straight draw or two clubs. Or perhaps even AT or some weird hand like that.

As played, I'd have to call . . . but I'd have bet the turn.

My live poker limit player theory is that they only bet the river with hands that crush you and missed flush draws. Getting six or seven to one, you have to call, but you only post this if you are beat. It's an interesting spot for a check-raise -- if you have the nerve. You will win the same pot if he is bluffing a missed flush draw and you might confuse enough other hands that beat you into folding to make it just cute enough.

I'd like to say I thought it out during the hand, but I actually called expecting to see a 7 or 9. In retrospect, he pretty much always bets those on the turn. He had T8cc, and was really surprised I called.

I was actually going to say that when nside said crushed or missed flushes. Something unique to low stakes LHE in a live envirnoment that I have seen are players taking a stab at the pot when you show weakness as it is their only way to win the pot. I hear them talk about it at the table all the time.

I'm glad that we're starting to see traffic in this section. I've decided to play limit live and on Stars and Full Tilt. I'd like to on my other sites as well, if they had any traffic. It's becoming apparent that I play NL SnGs and MTTs fairly well, but I suck [and tend to get sucked out on] at NL cash.

Yeah, they are going to bet busted draws a lot and this is a classic situation where they figure you for overcards.

Yeah, that's the main reason you have to call. Your hand screams Ace-Broadway as played. Having said that, a lot of players assume you'll play the same way they do, and a lot of players think AK is always a through-ticket to the river. So these players would expect you to call, and therefore wouldn't bet. But there are a lot of players who might watch how you play and think you might fold, too.
