2nd place in worst tourney on the net

Postby mchilger » Feb 06 2009

Pokerstars $50 Deepstack. 5000 in chips. 30 minute levels. What a bitch!!!

I signed up for it, then saw that it was deep stacked and it was too late to get out. Well...10 hours later, a victor was named out of 189 entrants.

Thankfully, it was a good day of work and I was paid $1468. I was pretty much in control the entire tourney once we made the money. I dominated the final table and had a big chip lead. I lost two big pots where I flopped top pair, and lost to my opponents two pair (where he had a worse kicker both times. KQ vs K5, and JT, J4. Crawled my way back but couldn't take it home.

I imagine my cash rate would be way up in this tourney if I played it all the time. The amount of play is ridiculous. But I won't be playing it again :). Good structures are great, but there is a limit.

Nice result Matthew. I hate to think what your reaction would have been if you had bubbled it.

Congrats Matthew :)

10 hrs! I'm surprised there were 189 entries, wonder how many, like you, didn't notice it was deep-stacked.

I've played this about 5 or 6 times, only cashing half of the time and only 1st - 3rd tiers when I did cash. Each time it took about 6 hours to do so. When I play it, it usually is the result of combination of things, like my wife being out of town, poor weather outside and the idea of getting x number of hours of entertainment for the lower buy-in.

Quite a few Jane. I think PokerStars runs this twice a day, most days except possibly Sunday and in the ones I have played people come to the conclusion that it will take 10-14 hours to complete right around the 1st hour. You can then pick up quite a few chips if you wait for their inevitable pushbot mode where they are trying to get out of it.

But be warned. As maf correctly states, bubbling is more frustrating and your hourly rate will get crucified if you don't final table.

I'm pretty sure the $10 deep stack is a much worse tourney. Congrats, Matthew.

These probably aren't bad practice for the Main Event if you don't often play deep.

I forgot about the $11. Yes that was an ugly one.

I once finished 22nd after about 11 hours of play for a cool $44. The only reason to play these is to get practice for deeper live events. And make sure you are wearing a diaper.

agreed. great practice for the WSOP main event. Terrible practice for a WPT event :)

As someone not that familiar with what makes a bad online tournament, could you elucidate further, Matthew?

Being a glutton for punishment - and incredibly patient - I want to try the $11 DS but can't find it. Anyone want to help? Thanks.

Yeah, I saw that schedule but it doesn't jive with the lobby. In fact, under Tourney - All, there's a San Remo on Sat at 12 for $760+40 and nothing at 12 on Sun? Either that schedule listing is outdated or I'm looking in the wrong place in the lobby.

I don't think all tourneys are listed with the same degree of advance notice.

Not to say that the page isn't wrong (it may well be), but the fact you can't see it at the moment isn't necessarily illustrative either.

The San Remo thing is presumably regarded as a "feature" event (and also has sats running) which might explain why it's listed further in advance.
