Image Assistance for Matthew

Postby BernardDogs » Sep 21 2004

From another thread within this post:

SVT749 wrote:7. I owe a thousand apologies to Matthew Hilger. In my original post I referred to him as Jeff by mistake. Matthew, my apologies -- it will not occur again. ...

SV ... earlier in the life of the forum, this happened oddly often. Not necessarily "Jeff", but something other than Matthew. At one point somebody suggested that we need to create a nickname for Matthew to take to the table for the sake of intimidation. If the newbies are suddenly up against "Action Matt", "The Hilger Express", or "The Jeff Gillooly of Poker" (points for who picks up the reference) ... he may seem more worthy of some amazing action. He's already picked up on this trend at our ITH events.

If we can get Harrington, Chan, and Ivey to also take note of "our guy" (N. Chad, 2004) and thereby throw their game as well ... then this image thing will only be icing on what has already become a noteworthy poker career.

Now, I'm no spin doctor ... but let's get this conversation started in earnest. I didn't know quite where to start this conversation, but it really is pure strategy.

1. High Hand Hilger (in reference to his tendancy to only play Aces)
2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Hilger

Cut/paste and add-on as you will.

I kind of like Jeff, simple and unexpected.

Are you going to reraise all in with a marginal hand if you know you are up against a "Jeff". It also saves on printing costs when we get out replica T-shirts for next years WSOP.

Failing that how about "Toptwo Fillhilger"

PS. Tanya Harding's husband... (that's the answer to the question, not a suggestion for a nickname.....although..... :? )

Just keeping the tally ... for ease of voting purposes.

1. High Hand Hilger (in reference to his tendancy to only play Aces)
2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Hilger
3. "The Gospel According to" Matthew Hilger
4. Jeff
5. "Top Two Fillhilger"

Nicknames rarely work with more than 2 syllables. One is best. Also, they shouldn't be rushed or forced. If the timing isn't right we should wait until a good one becomes obvious.

Of the ones listed, I prefer Jeff or Jim (after Jim Jones, since he has us drinking the cool aide).

If anyone asks what Jeff means think of all the smart ass replies that are possible:

like you don't know
are you kidding?
don't worry about it
it's his name dumbass
read the book
it's explained in the book
beats me
2500 people at the WSOP would like to know
Matthew is his pen name
he plays like a Jeff
he looks like a Jeff
he acts like a Jeff
figure it out

How about: Matthew "The Heat" Hilger

Because of all the heat he puts on you with those high hand all-ins.
Plus it has a bit of a Mafia hit man ring to it. ("Youse guys better watch it or Matthew "The Heat" Hilger will come around an' put a cap in you.")
Pain is temporary - quitting lasts forever.

I laughed out loud at pilchards reply...and everyone in my office gave me a funny look...then....

he plays like a Jeff
he looks like a Jeff
he acts like a Jeff

this made it worse.

I like Aceboy. Makes him sound kinda superhero-ish. I think he should wear a cape...oooh...and some sort of mask across his eyes like Zorro or Robin (of Batman and Robin fame) would have.

Catchphrase: "Holy Bad Beat Fossilman!"
PauliF: "I play spot the hooker on my own which is a terrible idea coz when you do that they come over and try to talk to you and touch you and that…."

For quite a while around here I believe he was Michael.

Sound out "ITH" into a word. "ith"

Mike Sexton: "Oh, look at this....Ith has flopped two pair!"

there = position or location
their = possessive form of "they"
they're = contraction of "they are"

"a lot" is two words. "alot" is not a word.

See, we're on to something here. I was editing my post into ALMOST this exact thing while the new guy was posting.
