big blind play to steal raise

Postby omega man » Mar 22 2010

your in big blind and some robber is after your blind, heads up.
What is min you defend with or do you defend with ATC.
What % is good for defending your big blind 40%/45%/50%/55%/60%,
So fold in big blind is the converse of those.
Maybe pokerstove can help here.
Any thoughts?

Guess we are talking NL, because in LHE you defend a ton anyways (85% I think) because imediate pot odds are bigger and implied odds smaller, so villain can never make immediate profit anyways.

In NL I don't mind allowing my opponent to make a small edge when he has the button. Your goal is only to minimize his profits from the button. Ultimately both of you will lose money in the BB anyways in HU NL. So your numbers seem terribly high. I fold my BB almost 70% in HU NL. I 3bet top 15-20% and call the rest. Defending much more is definitely spew, because OOP you will just get raped in NL.

Or are we talking about a ring game where it's folded to the SB? Now I defend close to any 2 in LHE, and ~70% in NL against an aggro opener. In NL I 3bet the top and bottom of my range and also call a ton to make his life miserable post flop. Against very aggro openers you should 3bet bluff way more than optimal, because they will have to fold so much when opening too wide, meaning auto-profit for you.

And are we talking about a button stealer or an SB that opens very wide when folded to him? In LHE you can generally defend extremely wide. Iirc there was something like a 35% threshold in Stox. Take PokerStove and look for all hands that have at least 35% equity against the presumed opening range of villain. Against an SB open raiser who opens too wide you can probably defend any 2.

Yeah, then take PokerStove and look up what hands have 35% equity against a steal raise. Off the top of my head, not having played FR LHE for years, I would say defending around 50% could be right up to 60% against really aggressive stealers.

In contrast with performing a button steal, a small raise from the button when no one else is in the pot often wins the blind without any contest from the small blind or big blind.
