In Matthew Hilger's book, Internet Texas Hold'em, he often refers to "betting out the rest of the hand." What does that term mean?

Betting out refers to betting when there are players behind you left to act - in other words you have the option of check-calling, check-raising, or betting out. This is different than if you were acting last since now check-raising or check-calling are no longer options.
