Texas Holdem Odds and Probabilities

Postby Bullajami » Jul 10 2006

This post should be in the book reviews section, but I wanted to start it here so I can shill the book a bit more for Matthew.

Being exceptionally busy thus far in 2006, this is the first poker book I've read in about 6 months and it really highlighted two things that should be VERY OBVIOUS:

1. I don't know as much about poker as I want to know.
2. I shouldn't wait 6 months between book reads.
:o

This book does a very good job of making comprehensible a few concepts I had not previously understood, refreshing concepts I did understand - but have forgotten (hence my need for perpetual poker study), and I even found a few things I seem to have totally missed before.

The hand examples are priceless, and have led me to see that while my PT 2.74 PF Aggression number is generally good, I have been over-aggressive in situations I shouldn't and under-aggressive in others.

Well done Matthew. Looking forward to my poker future with renewed inspiration.
Peace,
Bull

I just figured that one out myself. I got some new ones in a few weeks ago and was amazed at what I didn't know and what I used to know but forgot. I've now started rotating through my old poker books to see what else I have forgot or never really learned.

Bull - if you ever want to borrow a book, let me know. I've got quite the collection (if you didn't notice in April ).

I should be a lot better, considering I've read all but the newest ones...

Amazingly, despite the distractingly large and full liquor cabinet in the corner, I noticed your book collection, too. :o

I have a respectable library myself, but there are several newer books I think I should get. Fortunately I have never played at Noble or Poker.com, so there's half a dozen books from ITH right there. At the rate I read, that should take through 2009.
Peace,
Bull

Thanks Bull. Word of mouth is key to selling a poker book so it's great seeing positive comments posted on Forums and online book retailers. I still receive emails from time to time from people complementing ITH and it never gets old :).

That was a very good review, Bull, and it's motivated me to get to it. I'd been threatening to renew my studies (while villians trembled :D ). I will do so... while it's still legal.

What's worse, burning books or allowing 49 states access, but not one state? Sorry, off topic, but I'm still rocking from some other threads just made.

I've added a sticky poll and place for additional comments in the poker book forum here:

Please rate the book.

Matthew's new book has helped me understand a few things that were previously unclear. These things were both in limit and NL.

Since reading Matthew's book I have been playing very low buy-in MTT's in an attempt to apply what I have learned and to also deepen my understanding. So far I have cashed in all 6 I have played. :D (edit: make that 7 8) )

Matthew's latest book is already one of my favorites.

Matthews first book was the first Poker I bought and I have read and refer to it on a regular basis. So I intend to buy his latest also.

Since I made that decision about an hour ago, my hair has grown back and I have won every game I have played with either Royal Flushes or Full Houses. I cant wait to read it to it and see what happens then.

Im buying the book.
To master poker and make it profitable, you must first master patience and discipline, as a lack of either is a sure disaster regardless of all other talents, or lucky streaks.

I used to work in a Barnes and Noble. I went to a local one today, and found myself eventually in the Poker book section. And proceeded to face out both ITH and THOaP. I had to spine out some 2+2 books to make room, but who cares?

Were those 2+2 spines able to stand up to the punishment ?
