New WSOP Champion!

Postby philhux » Nov 09 2011

Victory for Germany! As someone who spends a lot of time in Germany I am curious as to what impact this might have. I'm quite afraid of there ending up being a French style segregated poker system here with sites only for German people, so I hope that a German winning the WSOP doesn't bring poker to the attention of some people who think this is a good idea!

I haven't watched three handed yet but before that Heniz played very aggro, I almost thought too aggro at one point, but he reigned it in. What a great job to go from shortstack to take it down. I'll be looking forward to watching the rest that I missed when I get chance.

I thought it was a pretty good fight. Didnt make it all the way to the end but what I saw it was a seesaw battle most of the way.

Congrats to Pius and heres to the King of Condiments..

Up to now the coverage of Heinz' win in the mainstream media in Germany was marginal. A couple of small articles in the newspapers but that's about it. Sandra "Black Mamba" Naujoks received more attention for her EPT win in 2009. Guess that's because a woman playing poker generates much more interest. Doubt that this is going to have a big effect on poker in Germany as a whole.

I read people saying Staszko had lots of great hands heads up and blew it. Is that what happened as I haven't watched it yet?

It seems like another Jerry Yang situation, short stack plays super aggro and brave to run over the table early and then manages to take it down.

Deserved win for sure.

I didn't see it all, but saw a lot of the heads-up. At the outset, Staszko got better starting hands and connected with the board far better than Heinz. But Staszko's style is much more passive -- so he didn't close it out when he had the best of it. But, for the most part, I thought he played reasonably well for his style of play. He countered Heinz's aggression with some thin 3 and 4-bets and generally adjusted reasonably well. He changed gears based on his stack size and meta-game and I thought both players played fairly solid. He lost a huge hand with a gutshot + flush draw all-in on the flop that was basically a flip that would have won the event for him.

I only remember one really spazzy play. The board was like 45Tss and he held Q6ss. Heinz led the flop, Staszko raised and then folded to the shove. It was an easy call and also would have won.

But you can nitpick plays they both made. Heinz had a couple of spazzy river shoves that could have really screwed him up, but he was generally fearless even with a short stack.

The 2+2 NVG analysis is LOL-bad. You have people calling Lamb's KJ shove the worst blowup ever when it really a super-standard LAG move on the first hand. He knows that both players watched the TV coverage of him running over the table and you know Staszko is 3 betting light there to send a message. It was a standard flip situation that half of the time would have Lamb with a big chiplead heads-up, plus TONs of fold equity.

There was this one crucial hand where Staszko had a full house on the river with A9 and leads out for 20m. If he'd checked Heinz would have bet most of his remaining stack after floating the turn. That probably cost him the win.

I stayed up to watch the live coverage on Tuesday night, finally giving up at around 5am because I was falling asleep. On Wednesday morning I avoided 2+2 and here so I could watch the rest without knowing who won. Foolishly I opened Stars to play a few hands while I watched - to be greeted by a giant pop-up window saying "Congratulations to Pius Heinz new WSOP champion!". :x

sorry MX!

A lot of German people have been asking me about him and about poker the last few days here in Berlin. Very interesting!

I have noticed more mainstream interest in the UK this year.

One of the programmers in the office took me to one side in the kitchen and quietly asked me if I could tell him the best places to play online as he'd heard me talk about it before. He did ask me if it was 'fixed' though. I told him about ITH so hopefully we'll have a new member shortly.

He saw the coverage and watched some of the final table. He's a math guy and really enjoyed the application in poker.

Someone else forwarded me the BBC article Pie featured in and asked if 'that was the thing I played in'. He's a casual player who sometimes plays in our low stakes cash game.

I figure all of this has to be a good thing.
