The Poker Mindset

Postby nukeduke » Jun 25 2007

The Poker Mindset: Essential Attitudes for Poker Success, has been making some noise lately. The book, written by our own Ian Taylor and ITH founder Matthew Hilger, takes a deep look at tilt, downswings, and bad beats and gives strategies to overcome these obstacles that every poker player faces. They answer the question of what "secret" separates top poker players from poker wannabes. Taylor and Hilger explain that pros use a series of established approaches and behaviors that enable them to bring their best game to the table session after session, regardless of short-term results.

The Poker Mindset consists of seven "attitudes" that need to become part of your mental outlook. The first may well be the most important to your state of mind and your game: "Understand and accept the realities of poker." Recognize the role that luck plays in the short term and the game's high degree of variance. Understand the reality that even a great player has a relatively small edge. You not only have to shrug off the bad beats, you have to welcome them - well sometimes :)

I've read or heard in various forums or even live casinos that this book is only for those that suffer from tilt or other related problems. I might enlighten those folks that the subject of ego is also extensively looked at  .

As of the date of this post The Poker Mindset is a top ten among poker books at Amazon.com. The links that follow give good insight to what others in the poker world have to say about The Poker Mindset:

What a great book -
Unlike Matthew's others, I did not have the time to edit and enjoy it before print. But I must say, no offense to my friend and partner, this may be the best poker book I've read. It was a breeze to read (for a change :)) and hits a lot of great concepts right on the head.

I think its a must read -

Just ordered Ed Miller's new book through Amazon and gave out a Woot! ... Poker Mindset was in the top 5 book recommendations under "Customers who bought this item also bought" ... and when I clicked on Alan Schoonmaker's "Your Worst Poker Enemy" Pie's book was coupled with it :)

I took this as an excellent sign the book is selling well, deservedly so :)

Think I've said it before, but congrats on the book. After over a year of stagnant poker, I've been able to get back to consistent winning ways and finally moved up another level becasue of it.

Cheers Guys 8)

After reading some pokerbooks in the past and playing for two years I decided to buy this book in the hope that......

So I received it a week ago and after reading the first 100 pages I already can say this is the best one I've read. It's really an eyeopener. It should be one of the first books to read if you start to play the game we all love.

I can recommend it to any new, average or pro player. Even if I'm still an amateur and don't know how to think like a pro (yet :P )

Some will ask why just 100 pages after a week. Well, english is not my native language so I always have to use a dictionary the first time :? But if it is yours, you will read it in one breath. And yes..... I still have a job to do for my living

After I've read it the second time I'll be back to rate this book.

so and now..... reading
